Weekly Garden Thread - December 26, 2020 - January 1, 2021
December 26, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Ping & Post earlier than normal - have a lot going on tomorrow, and I knew I'd better start the thread when I remembered to!

Looked into growing peanuts, star anise and cardamon. Then came to my senses

So the usual tomatoes, peas, beans, cukes, melons, peppers and eggplant. Zone 6

I have grown peanuts in southwest Pennsylvania(zone 6) for several years. They’re easy to grow and interesting to watch grow. I have started indoors and sown directly. Give it a try.

I actually found a peanut plant growing in my CNY garden one year.

I guess the squirrels forgot about it.

Fennel is sometimes listed as a substitute for both anise and star anise. It should grow in your area. So would true licorice, which is what they’re all described as tasting like.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. My mother is in a long term care facility in Virginia and my sister who lives nearby wasn’t allowed to take her home for a Christmas dinner. She wasn’t even allowed to visit her. The nurses brought her to an area where they could drive by and wave to her. What a way to treat an 86 year old woman. Sad.
On a gardening note I will be starting my 2021 new pepper seeds this week. It seems like the hotter they are the longer the seeds take to germinate and the slower they grow. I hope to have peppers by August.

I grew paprika and cayenne peppers a year ago. Dehydrated and ground them into shaker ready dust.
I have a lifetime supply...

We have great luck with cayennes, been growing the giant ones or a few years now. We get more than enough from just 2 plants.

Does eagerly watching the ice freeze on Medicine Lake in MN count as growing? I have waited since last March to get out on the lake.
(I like to walk on the lake. With the snow, it’s not as slippery as the paths/sidewalks/roads)

As you know, there’s only 10-12 weeks of good lake ice.

Well, I didn’t garden at all last year. We (me mostly) worked on getting the old fence out and the new one in.

It is about 80% done. Which is dumb because it’s such a small garden and should have been long finished. We have to do the chicken wire business at the bottom in the spring. AND fix the back “wall” from when Hubby purposefully startled the deer and they tried to run out that way.

Anyway, it looks like I will have time to garden again this spring - the shop where I work will be going out of business. Mostly because the owner is too arrogant to make changes as needed, but he is blaming covid. I will really miss my little job, but am trying to console myself with the promise of a garden!

Only ONE fall-through on the Madison lakes so far. That’s some sort of record, LOL!

Ice is slow to form this year - we’re all over the map as far as temps go. Very warm Fall, and now anywhere from teens to 40’s in a week. Goofy.

But - I’ll take it over sub-zero weeks on end, and feet of snow! :)

HO HO HO!!! Merry Christmas!!!

The weather here in Central Missouri snapped off cold for Christmas this year.

It’s too cold out there for me to do much of anything other than throw some wood in the furnace and then go back inside.

I’m warming the shop up now. It should be nice and toasty in there when I’m ready to venture out to putz. I hope to have the new fuel tank for Pops’ tractor finished by the end of the weekend. Probably won’t happen, but that’s what I’m shooting for.

The kale and collards are laying on the ground looking sick, but they will stand back up and snap out of it as soon as the temps warm up a bit. It always amazes me to see that stuff flopped out one day, and then a few days later it looks perfectly healthy.

“It always amazes me to see that stuff flopped out one day, and then a few days later it looks perfectly healthy.”

December 26th and I sent a BIG bag of kale home with Mom to deliver to a friend.

I had lettuces in the greenhouse until yesterday, but I’m done with that for now. Time to hibernate. ;)

Merry Christmas!
