Weekly Garden Thread - September 12-18, 2020
September 12, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 09/12/2020 6:00:32 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Good morning. Not much going on here-clean up. Going to order seeds for next spring now. Also need some winter wheat for planting in October. Lemons are finally starting to turn yellow.

I have 2 turmeric plants a little over 3 ft. tall. Such pretty leaves.

I planted some Minnesota midget melons this year. I started them in a container and transplanted later. First time I actually got vines to last long enough for the fruit to mature.

Very strange thing happened. I got yellow smooth melons bigger than the usual midgets and not a flavorful. I got smaller melons(usual size) that had netting and more flavor.

Since these were seeds straight from their packet, there should have been no difference.

I’ve been up all night, so signing off to catch some ZZZs. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Have to admit not reading all - and it serves me right.

I should have been paying more attention to the posts on canning.

I make my cloth masks (that I have to wear at work) out of cheesecloth - very breathable.

Usually get the cheesecloth in the paint section of the hardware store - but they were all out.

Some worker seen me looking about - asked what I was looking for - then she walked me across the store to the home canning section - rolls and rolls of cheesecloth.

Lesson learned..

We’re closing in on 24 or 25 frozen stuffed peppers in the freezer and the pepper plants are still kicking em out.
I estimate we’ll have two or three dozen big peppers to give away.

You’re Welcome, Tiana!

Greeneyes: I, too, am buying seed for next season. No more dinking around with ‘determinate’ experiments which resulted in lower tomato yields than normal and less disease resistance.

Totally Tomatoes still had my faves in stock, so I bought (and highly recommend):

Alliance Pepper (green to red)
Baron Pepper (green to red)
Gourmet Pepper (orange)

Tomatoes:
Bella Rosa
Chef’s Choice Black
Chef’s Choice Orange
Chef’s Choice Red
Goliath Italian
Juliet
La Roma 3
Sunsugar (cherry)

http://www.totallytomatoes.com

Going to see what Jung’s still has available in seed, today.

(Jung’s owns both companies as well as Shumway, Vermont Bean Seed Company, and a few others; just different marketing, same seed stock.)

I’m in the midst of the California wildfires - I’m not getting the flames, I’m getting the smoke and ash fallout. The smoke is making the skies overcast so it a bit cooler and the plants like that after the brutal heat wave we had last week.

Last week’s 115 degree heat was hard on my garden but I only lost one salvia from my bee garden. There was also some drop-off of figs from my fig tree.

Today looks to be a bit clearer so I’ll be able to work outside again.

I am pulling my basil out today and replacing it with spinach for the fall. Took cuttings this week from my lemon verbena and lemon thyme to transplant indoors for the winter. I have them in water to root first. Deciding on what other herbs. About a month ago I planted some seeds in an empty pot with a child, mainly to keep him entertained for a few minutes. I now have three pepper plants I am going to try and keep going in a south facing window.

Planted Minnesota Midgets and we got quite a crop. Because they ripen almost all at once, I did give some away. Did get about 40 melons from eight plants that I started from seed.

Next year, I'm gonna stagger the planting so that one batch is two or 3 weeks behind.

The melons were awesome in taste and texture. Pretty easy to eat two a day.

Wedding Day! We have had brutal, horrible humidity this past week and thunderstorms .... initially, the weather looked bad for the weekend. Well, a front is pulling through & although it's cloudy, the chance of rain is only 10%, the humidity is dropping, & the skies should partially clear this afternoon. It should be nice weather for the wedding ... even a little cool this evening.

My Fall Zinnia Garden has its first bloom, with plenty of buds so it should be a very colorful spot in the garden soon. I've been making a lot of jalapeno poppers so I don't waste peppers. We been using up the bell peppers by stir frying with onions for a homemade version of Beef Pepper Steak. The hummingbirds have started migrating - we have a few still around, but I'm already missing all the aerial acrobatics & "buzzing" around the garden. Earlier this week, the hummers drained both feeders (10 oz each) in 2 days & after that, I noticed the activity had dropped off dramatically. They were 'fueling up' for their trip south. The figs are ripening - we can't keep up with eating them and I haven't had time to try canning them.

2nd pot of coffee is ready ... I've been up since 3:15 & downed the first pot by 5:00. It looks like the vehicles from next door are being moved to our field - we're hosting the parking. I see some setup going on around the tent - huge tent - 3 peaks on the roof - looks like something out of Camelot!

Have a great day/weekend, everybody. Couple of butterfly-on-Tithonia pics .....

This morning I sent your sunflower to several far away family members. Your flower is spreading seeds of happiness for sure. Already received wonderful replies. Even from one who really needed it.

Thank you.

Great pics. Thanks. i had a hummingbird right outside my window yesterday enjoying the tiny red flower on a bush (don’t know the name)...and last week i opened the curtains to my walkout and had a preying mantis on the outside window looking right at me...face high. What a cool way to start a day. Most days 3 cranes are in our yard or the neighbors when my wife and i are taking the dogs for a way.

As of last night, I have a praying mantis hanging out on one of the hummingbird feeders - it's eating ants. There was a bit of a standoff with a hummer & the mantis last night - hummer was buzzing it, feinting at it & the mantis waved an 'arm' at the bird. Things were happening too fast to get a picture - tried, but just got blurs; however, it was fun to watch.

Not a great pic - camera wouldn't focus on mantis.

I had to pull my cucumbers....They were driving me nuts..was picking 10 a day. Didn’t even plant a second crop. But did do peas, lettuce, spinach, basil, bush beans in a round two.
