"While the COVID-19-related closures have caused us to reassess the viability of some company-owned locations and make the difficult decision to permanently close about 30 gyms, we know that we will emerge from this stronger and ready to grow," the company said in a statement on its Facebook page.

I bet every one of those areas closing, a Planet Fitness moved in last few years. $10 month membership fee or Gold Gym $75??
PF moved into my area and knocked out 3 independent gyms. Can’t compete with $10 a month membership. PF has modern equipment that gets fixed pronto.
Insurers are going to be hesitant to issue a policy to a gym as if the virus gets traced back to a certain gym, there will be a major payout.
Those little commercial gyms are the whole fitness industry? Wow. Things have changed.
If the gyms were open, how would they get enough customers to keep memberships? Most people who work out don’t want to go in those gyms, showers and restrooms.
They were in bad shape...a bunch of them closed in north Virginia last year.
Well when the response to a disease shuts down your revenue for months, what would happen to your business?
This could be a way to shutter poorer-performing locations and trying to write them off as insurance claims.
There will be a lot of deals on Bowflex and similar lightly used home gym equipment in about 12 months, I predict.
I know. The public gym is a business model that I am thinking probably will not survive all this, but maybe I am wrong.
I personally never used such services even before this, because I do not want to lay in other peoples’ sweat. I bought my own weight bench and free weights for the house. I like to use old high school gym dungeon types of weights anyway, not into machines. So I was not going to be returning to such gyms upon reopen anyway.
But my friend might. He was religiously hitting the gym every day before this. He is a hardcore flubro, and I expect that given the chance to return to his routine, he would.
I think he and the gym should be given that opportunity for commerce now. We did what we were asked, now let those who would return return.
Not a single Gold’s Gym in our area because PF got here first.
If you do CrossFit or mainly lift with weights, you dont have to worry about gym germs from machines.
Most people who work out dont want to go in those gyms,
Proof? Fauci would say that is anecdotal or just your opinion and needs to be tested.
Im surprised since you usually pay for a full year up front at those types of gyms , though I guess youd have to reimburse people for the time it was closed.
This is one of those types of businesses that probably would have been in serious distress even if governments never shut them down. Once you had sports leagues canceling their events and suspending their seasons, you would have had a large-scale public fear about them no matter what any political leader did.
Freepers here on this thread with the they were weak anyway posts... You all realize that Small-Medium Businesses DO often operate on a thin margin, and its ok, and that the system was already set up against them?
Then the government told customers they would be arrested if they went, and the owners would be arrested if they opened - in markets where a few dozen died.
And do not forget about, Read my lips.
The economy is toast....it is either open it all up at once and you take your chances....
Or it is control by the CDC and every government worker
I’m suprise that Hollywood has not figured out what is happening to them...
Must be TDS
I have rediscovered push ups, crunches and pull ups.
Go to military.com and look at their training plans, no gym required.
My home office is doubling as a work from home office and personal gym. It’s working out really well.
I have a set of 12 lb, 15 lb and 20 lb dumbbells.
I’m duck taping them together to create progressive weights.
My traps require 2 duck taped 15s with a 20 velcro straped to them.
For cardio I bike. Today 47+ miles avg. 17 mph.
Nobody “needs” a gym.
