Charlie, a female Komodo dragon at the Chattanooga Zoo in Tennessee, has proved to be the ultimate independent lady after successfully giving birth to three hatchlings without a male partner.
Even though Charlie and a potential mate named Kadal were placed together in hopes of breeding, the first-time mother produced the three brothers, named Onyx, Jasper, and Flint. She was able to do this on her own through a phenomenon called parthenogenesis.
It's extremely rare among vertebrates: Only 70 backboned species can do it, which is about 0.1 percent of all vertebrates, according to Scientific American.

Yeah...
That’s what Mrs. Komodo told Mr. Komodo...
That would be my first guess, but there are critters that can apparently change sex somehow so maybe mom is not just a mom....
The Komodo Dragon is the worlds largest living lizard.
It is a ferocious carnivore, and one swipe of its gigantic tail can render an enemy senseless.

Have they applied for welfare?
“Its different in komodo dragons. Females have W and Z chromosome. Males have two Zs. If mom produces two Z gametes, which she can, and they merge, voila... ZZ = male offspring.”
As a biology major I’m impressed I didn’t know that, and I love esoteric facts like that. Thanks
‘If it is true parthenogenesis, the offsprings should be genetic clones of mom.’
like the man said in St George and the Dragon Net, ‘you see one dragon, you’ve seen ‘em all...’
Thanks for the explanation, since I was always taught that parthenogenesis could only produce female offspring.
They know the father was a travelling insurance salesman and Geico is paying a lot of money to keep it out of the news.
lol.....
What a coincidence!
She might be lying.
Omg funny
Sounds a little like Mrs. Cartman in South Park.
Bill Clinton was seen leaving the scene a short time ago.
Maybe she got pregnant getting the Komodovirus?

Reptiles don’t have a Y Chromosome. Or an X for that matter. It’s a different setup, like with birds. They have W and Z chromosomes.
