More than 2,600 years ago, strange red clouds over Mesopotamia drew the attention of soothsayers across the land. Their royal reports have now helped confine the date of a severe solar storm that washed over the planet.
Based on readings of carbon isotopes trapped in tree rings deposited around that time, astronomers already suspected there was a period of intense solar activity around the middle of the 7th century BC...
And it seemed like it had pretty far-ranging effects. Earlier in the year, geologists reported similar signs of a storm from around this period in traces of radioactive particles buried in Greenland's ice.
Assyria and Babylon were home to a slightly different kind of astronomer one who looked for omens among the heavens.
When things got a bit weird overhead, these sky-watchers would note down the details on palm-sized clay tablets in cuneiform, recording the type of ominous event, maybe a prediction or two, and signing it off with their name and sometimes the date.
These could then be sent to government authorities, who would use the information to make important decisions. After digging through translations of a number of Assyrian astrological tablets dated to the 7th and 8th centuries, the researchers eventually found three mentioning either a red glow, red clouds, or red covering the sky.

None of them came with a timestamp, but they were all signed off by a different author, either Issār-umu-ēre, Nabû-aḫḫē-erıba, or Zākiru, who each reported to kings of either Babylon or Nineveh.

Early global warming. It was a political issue even in the 7th century BC
How bad is this reporting ... 3 2 1 Its Trumps fault again.
Chronologically 700 years later, published another several hundred years later:
Matthew 16:2
He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
Red sky in morning, sailor take warning.
I think this was predicted ahead of time, and might relate to that underground city in far eastern Turkey that was found around 10 to 20 years ago.
Might be interesting to see if this also occurred around 12,900 years ago as well, and was what helped that giant glacier over North America melt in epic and quick fashion.
Those were carvings of the local angry leftists of their day.
So we’ve been talking about red skies associated with an “epic solar storm” for 2,700 years.
Big Fake Science stepped in it big time this time, proving no climate change in recorded history.
Cool post. Or a possible weakening of the magnetosphere?
There is a site - Suspicious Observers - that digs into this sort of solar paper.
Ben has some interesting insights, well worth spending some time at the site and looking at some of the videos.
Cool site, thank you!
Wouldnt all that excess c14 mess up the carbon 14 chronologies? How could c14 be a reliable universal chronometer if the amount in ambient atmosphere can vary from place to place based on solar activities and atmospheric distribution?
YDE Younger Drayas Event. All cultures have remnants of a VERY BAD DAY that may have had warning signs that have been passed down. Changes in the sky from the norm were universally assumed to portend disaster. Similar events may have continued at intervals throughout human history. But the YDE changed the whole world forever. Some religious notions now deemed backward were very practical back then.
Also read about some Greek and Finnish mythology that refers to fires from the sky causing a year of darkness and death. Parts of Kalevala in particular could describe very long held fears.
either way, the search engine delivers. Thanks for pointing that out.
