The Ketogenic Diet and Diabetes

The ketogenic diet was originally developed almost 100 years ago to treat epilepsy. Nowadays, it is used as a nutrition plan by health-conscious men and women to optimize body composition and athletic performance.

Recent research suggests that high fat, very-low carb diets have another benefit: They may help control glucose, triglycerides, insulin, and body weight in people with diabetes. The research below shows the ketogenic diet may be an effective tool you can use to manage symptoms of Diabetes, alongside exercise and medication.

Controlling carbs and avoiding added sugar works for me. Call it Keto, call it Atkins, call it Caveman, doesn't matter what you call it. It works for me.

There were times in my life when I weighed well over 300 pounds. That was when I poured sugar in my coffee, had danish, donuts and cereal for breakfast, deli sandwiches and chips for lunch, and "trimmed" meats for dinner with sides of rice, pasta and potatoes. Yes, I actually trimmed the fat from my meat and thought I was doing the healthy thing!

Now I actively seek the fattiest cuts of meat. I have fried eggs every morning with whole-milk (high fat) yogurt and a few berries mixed in. Lunch is usually a salad with no dressing but topped with cheese, olive oil and generous portion of nuts. Dinner is a meat (fish, chicken, beef, pork) with sides of green veggies like brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus or kale, topped with either olive oil or butter.

Also, I now drink red wine instead of beer.

I can always find something to eat wherever I go but these are things I avoid at all costs:

Bread
Pasta
Candy, cookies, ice cream, cake, pies
Any kind of snack food like chips, popcorn, etc
Potatoes (but do have sweet potato once in while)

Everything I do eat has minimal processing and added sugars.

Pretty much works out to the same amount of calories (approx 2500-3000 a day) but now I'm much thinner, more energetic and healthy.

It’s not for everyone, nor should most stay on it indefinitely..

I somehow became a competitive power lifter in my 30s. I am very tall and so have to be thin to make my weight class. (It’s a sport for mesomorphs of average height.)

Anyway, I go strictly keto for 3-4 months out of the year to drop weight and moderate carbs the rest of the year. (I typically time it for Passover — because of the obvious.)

I’m older and still maintain a 10-15% body fat while pulling over 700.

It’s an effective tool. But just one of many tools.

I only eat 1x daily, and not a yuge meal.

No booze, no soda, no grains knowingly, no breads.

Doing great, so far.

I don’t have to wake up to pee, not even one time —ever.

Lots of other benefits. I went through Keto Flu and my lifts went down for a time but now they’re back to normal.

I went on Atkins in the late 80s, lost 62 pounds and easily maintain 50 of them. Prime rib and a Caesar salad (without croutons) is my personal favorite dinner. Ribs and coleslaw (Splenda instead of sugar) ain’t half bad either.

I eat all the candy I want on Hallowoeen and as much carbs as I want on Thanksgiving, Christmas and my birthday. Oh yeah... Frito’s Scoops with onion dip on New Year’s Eve.

There is “Dirty Keto” and “Clean Keto”.

Try to eliminate the processed food, even if it’s “Keto Friendly”.

Salt.

After a close relative ended up in the Cardiac ICU for a couple of days with congestive heart failure - nearly dying before my eyes at one point - I went grocery shopping. I was gone for 2 HOURS looking for things the person could eat.

Salt is in almost EVERYTHING. There is salt in Jello. Of course, it’s a preservative, but between the (something)-ose, actual sugar, and salt, you have to look and maybe end up eating 5 things for the rest of your life. For salt, for example, we’re talking a pinch of salt per day/400 mg.

I eat little salt now, but even the salt substitutes are bad for you, or so I’m told.

I concluded this while in line at a Blaze Pizza which offers a Keto crust...and...i dunno all these perfectly healthy young people requesting it like it were some new flashy item at a store...and one just wonders what it was like in the simple days of fresh baked bread at home in the village and milk straight from the cow, etc...

I learned that most stuff in restaurants or stores that claim they are "Keto Friendly", aren't. I don't trust them. Better off making your own stuff.

Probably no greater waste of time and the financial resources of hard working people than cathedrals and moon walks. (Killer satellites and middles capable of destroying space based enemies would be ok)

I also do not eat the expensive LYING food specifically aimed at Keto noobs, with that splashy marketing (often contains clever nutrition lies that are legally permitted) that will screw you up while emptying your wallet.

Yes. I dunno aside from how overly processed or compromised typical supermarket items are, a rightful observation to be sure...I find this country’s propensity for fad diets equally disturbing. Just seems like another way of maintaining control and equilibrium in an uncertain world. Like a psychological self-medicating endeavor.

I could have sworn there was an article here in the past few days that talked about how bad the Keto plan was for one’s health. I guess it all depends on who is paying the researchers and scientists, huh...

There was such an article. Just like how there will be one about how bad coffee is, followed by one touting the health benefits of coffee.

I made that switch. Even developed a taste for it though I my palette never got much beyond perhaps being able to differentiate between a cabernet and a merlot. Dry red wine has very little actual sugar in it. Then I learned that your liver actually metabolizes alcohol into blood sugar. :o It is part of the way in which blood alcohol levels drop after time. So you really don’t want to drink more than a glass or two because it can lower you out of your ketosis temporarily. Most people wouldn’t drink a lot anyway, but the point is, you don’t want to lean into it too much. One odd effect though is that if you do consume a fair bit of alcohol, part of the reason you experience a hangover is because it actually induces some degree of ketosis, which is why hardcore alcoholics can actually go into ketoacidosis.

What I have read is that it does put diabetes into remission, but keto, by itself, doesn’t repopulate your pancreas with new cells.

However, there are at least two studies showing a fasting regimen with no more than a couple hundred calories for a few days can start stems cells to repopulate the pancreas. I may have posted one of these a year or so ago.

I know a woman who went on a strange diet, for Lent if I recall. Ate just chicken, eggs, spinach, water. Started feeling good, kept it up, lost weight fast. Given such results she decided to stay as close to that regimen as possible. Worked for her. I’ve seen her eat pizza so she’s not a fanatic about it.
Moderation seems to be a big hurdle for most people.
