A freshman sprinter on the University of Georgia track team was hospitalized after he was accidentally impaled by a javelin, the school said Wednesday.

Elija Goodwin suffered a punctured and collapsed left lung when he backed into a javelin implanted in the ground while running backward sprints, according to a police report obtained by WXIA.

Medical workers sawed off a piece of the javelin that was sticking out of Goodwin’s back, the station reported. He was transported to a nearby hospital where the rest of the javelin was surgically removed by doctors.

IIRC, Javelins were AMC, not MOPAR.

Due to the fear of liability, the javelin throw is not an event in NFHS high school competition in 36 states, though USATF youth competitions for the same aged athletes do hold javelin competitions.[14] At various points in time, high schools have attempted to create substitute events, including the softball throw, football throw[15] and the grenade throw,[16] throwing different objects under rules similar to javelin throw rules. In those states that do allow high school javelin competition, a few specify that the tip must be of rubber. Further, in age group track meets in the U.S., and in particular with elementary-school children in the Northeast, the Turbojav—a smaller plastic implement with a rubber tip but with similar flying characteristics as a real javelin—is a popular alternative.

It is sport throwing a spear. And in this case it was not thrown.

No coaches around? Running backwards is not safe without spotters.

I threw the Javelin in college.

In practice we threw it back and forth to each other. If by chance it was headed towards you, you simply walked out of the way.

A freshman sprinter on the University of Georgia track team was hospitalized after he was accidentally impaled by himself on a javelin, the school said Wednesday.

There! The javelin was innocent.

We need a nation-wide ban on golf clubs because they can be used as clubs.

I see your point.>>>>>>>>>>>

According to Elija Goodwin, everybody is missing a point.

I suppose that’s a good thing.

His dad dated one of the Pointer Sisters?

Humor concerning such a tragedy is indeed pointless. Its bad enough to suffer pale, but the impale is far worse.

I am sure Elijah will recover fully and retain his position on his track team as the tip of the spear.

If one can run forward faster that one runs backwards, its much more likely one can get off the hook.

The US Marines often call it walking the point. They really know how that works, G_d bless them.

The old joke went that the University of Alabama’s first scholarship for a black athlete went to a javelin catcher.

I tried throwing the javelin in HS.

Couldn't get the technique down, and my arm would ache for days afterward.

I didn't pursue it.

50 years later I still have shoulder pains from throwing the javelin. My Dr. gives me a cortisone shot about every 3 months.

Im sure if he looks back on this it will be less painful. But then again, hindsight is NOT alway 20/20.

"This ain’t the first time this has happened.
Javelins are dangerous............."

Yep! Just the other night, while watching a rerun of "Vikings", I saw a wicked javelin competition... Even some of the spectators/bystanders were impaled as they lay on the ground...
