A freshman sprinter on the University of Georgia track team was hospitalized after he was accidentally impaled by a javelin, the school said Wednesday.
Elija Goodwin suffered a punctured and collapsed left lung when he backed into a javelin implanted in the ground while running backward sprints, according to a police report obtained by WXIA.
Medical workers sawed off a piece of the javelin that was sticking out of Goodwins back, the station reported. He was transported to a nearby hospital where the rest of the javelin was surgically removed by doctors.

It is amazing there are such few accidents considering several events may be seen on the field along with javelin.
But metal tipped lawn darts were banned .

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

I don’t think safety glasses would have helped in this case.

Running backwards and planting javelins like for a palisade must be pretty high-brow stuff, coming from a university and all.

Saw a nice set in an antique mall last week, no obvious bloodstains on the tips.

Needs a spotter for backwards sprints. I can do it for a decent wage.

In all seriousness, man, that was painful to read.
In jest, it is a good lesson. When javelins are outlawed only bad guys will have javelins....
...and MOPAR collectors.
