In 1959 Rod Serling's TV series, "The Twilight Zone," made its debut on CBS. Though not a major success at the time, the show that served up horror and science fiction stories as winking tales of contemporary society has taken on legendary status, influencing films and TV ever since. David Pogue looks at how Serling crafted a TV classic with New York Times television critic James Poniewozik, and talks with the writer's daughter, Jodi Serling, about the influence that his hometown, Binghamton, N.Y., had on Serling's allegorical tales. Pogue also talks with Jordan Peele, the writer-comedian behind the Oscar-winning "Get Out" and "Us," who this week introduces a new iteration of "The Twilight Zone," debuting on CBS All Access.

When you hear those four notes, you start to look around.

It wasn’t a success when it came out?
I thought it was...Waited for it every Friday night...
I remember watching it, but back then there wasn’t much choice.
It’s on METV now every night (morning) at 12:30 AM...
Night Gallery was great and so was The Outer Limits.
People just don’t get good TV anymore.
Is there *anyone* who doesn’t have a horror of earwigs after that Night Gallery episode?
Best written show in history. Love Rod Serling.
I heard people put cotton in their ears after that episode.
Night Gallery died when Serling died. Hated those silly “Sixth Sense” episodes tacked onto it.
Bought the complete DVD series. No “Sixth Sense” additions in the DVD.
One thing which always gets my attention in those 1950s and 1960s TV shows is how many people are smoking.
I have read that it is a device to give their hands something to do. Same for the drinks always in their hands in “Dallas”.
Saw the preview on CBS “Sunday Morning.” It sounds like the stories will mostly have a “social justice” flavor - about race, the poor, etc. I’m sure one will be about some powerful politician too. Trying to recreate a successful original series using today’s political climate buzzwords may please the elites but likely will not catch on with us unwashed “deplorables.”
I wouldn’t wonder.
Even though I know they’re harmless, every time I see one, I think of that show.
“It was a female and it laid eggs!”
Aaaaaugghhhhh!
:D
I didn’t watch any of the “reboots”.
I was just surfing around and saw that there was a “new” Outer Limits that tried to happen.
Must’ve missed it.
Then there was Tales From The Dark Side and the hokey Friday The 13th” TV series which was about cursed objects in an antique shop.
Huh..sounds like Must Miss TV.
I remember when the new “Roswell” came on.
I thought, well the original was pretty good so I will check it out. I had not watched a full minute before there was some crap about immigration and sicking the ACLU on someone.
I never got to see the rest so don’t know if it was any good. I had already turned the channel.
I found a couple of British series called “Thriller” and “Tales of the Unexpected” on Amazon Prime, from the 1970s.
