One thing which always gets my attention in those 1950s and 1960s TV shows is how many people are smoking.

I have read that it is a device to give their hands something to do. Same for the drinks always in their hands in “Dallas”.

We were led to believe that cigarettes were almost good for us! LOL I bet 30 percent of the commercials were cigarette related.

A couple weeks ago I saw the stage version of Twilight Zone in London. After a faux Rod Serling video intro with cigarette in his hand, the various actors in the recreated episodes suddenly found cigarettes in their hands (by sleight of hand) to their surprise and couldn’t let them go. It got laughs even from the British crowd which were mostly confused by TZ.

Watched TZ and Outer Limits when they were first on and I was a kid. I’d never waste a minute watching the upcoming one.

More likely it was a sign of the times, most everyone smoked. But more likely it had to do with tobacco companies sponsoring so much entertainment.

No wonder today people can't put their phones down.
