I think it was slow catching on, MASH was not a success when it came on either.

Serling had a really hard time keep sponsors. Budget got cut drastically after the first season. Came in as a mid season replacement for season 4 (couldn’t find a sponsor on time to start in September). And needed co-sponsorship in the 5th and final season. So, actually it wasn’t that successful.
