Cutting carbs has become a go-to strategy for runners and cyclists looking to cut weight. Now, research suggests it might be wise to cut that out, or at least approach cutting carbs with caution.
Thats because people consuming a low proportion of their daily calories from carbohydrates like grains, fruits, and starchy vegetables appear to be significantly more likely to develop atrial fibrillation (AFib)an irregular heart rhythm that can raise your risk of blood clots or stroke, according to preliminary research set to be presented at the American College of Cardiologys annual meeting.
The study analyzed the health records and dietary intake of nearly 14,000 people from 1985 to 2016. At the beginning of the study, none of the participants had AFib. Nearly 1,900 were diagnosed with the condition over the course of 22 years.
The researchers discovered that those who reported having a low carbohydrate intake were the most likely to develop AFib. Specifically, those who ate fewer than 45 percent of their diet from carbs were 18 percent more likely to develop AFib than those who had a moderate carb intake of 45 to 52 percent of daily calories from carbs. They were also 16 percent more likely to develop the heart rhythm disorder than those eating a high-carb diet of more than 52 percent of calories from carbs.
Low carbohydrate diets were associated with increased risk of incident AFib regardless of the type of protein or fat used to replace the carbohydrate, said the studys lead author Xiaodong Zhuang, M.D., Ph.D., a cardiologist at the hospital affiliated with Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, in a press release.

Keto is not supposed to be a high protein diet. Its one of the few ways to mess up your body with keto. The average person on keto should only have 50-100g of protein depending on exercise levels
Oh yeah, you can have squash — zucchini, which is a type of squash isn’t very high carb. asparagus, eggplant also. and low sugar fruits like strawberries, blackberries, blueberries.
You can have tons of butter, most cheeses, plain yogurt, kefir.
I don’t cut carb enough to reach keto (<20g gram carb) but I do fairly low carb with grain/potato/pasta avoidance. I also eat healthier fats and seafood (shrimp + fatty fish) and exercise. The health benefits amazing for over 1 year.
When I eat out with friends I eat everything (including rice and wine) but my daily habit is different.
“Didnt peanut M&Ms used to have chocolate in them? That last time I had them, no detectable chocolate. Id rather eat Goobers...”
Great googelly-moogelly haven’t you heard about peanuts yet!
I am sort of joking here... But there are studies about the amount of chemicals that they have to pump into the soil and spread on top of the earth to get peanuts to actually be a production crop with profitable yields. Peanuts can grow without it but we’re talking Big-Agra here and they need lots of product being grown and they need a plentiful Harvest every year, year after year so as to not go broke.
The bad news... Peanuts in the shell retain the chemicals which soak through the shell to inside of the shell and is processed into the peanuts and into the other items that peanuts are made from.
There’s a possibility that these allergies we are seeing related to peanuts for the last several decades might be caused from chemical materials.
Let me put it to you this way... I love peanuts but after reading several bodies of research in the last few years I think I gave them permantely up a year ago finally... unkess I can grow my own... Because to be quite frank... it scared the Living Daylights out of me.
I thought it might be more prudent yo back off of foods containing lots of pesticides and in the case of peanuts - pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides.
oh yeah i also eat a lot of eggs and my cholesterol is drastically improved despite eating lots of the highest cholesterol foods
This wasn’t directed towards me personally but I still find this type of reaction to somebody on a generalized comment section rather odd...
“I said it once but Ill say it again, I dont want your advice.”
Might I inquire that if this individual doesn’t seek advice why are they posting anything on a Blog that offers people the opportunity to discuss and propagate their opinions and advice?
I don’t mean any offense. But self introspection concerning the whys and wherefores of people reading, posting, discussing, and responding might be in order here.
It seems perplexing.
I agree.
But the article included fruits in carbs, so I just went along with that definition.
In any event, our bodies eventually try to convert almost all the carbs we eat into sugar.
No, I know someone who’s been hitting the sauce pretty hard.
Neat trick, too, that cranial-sphincter inversion & all...
You’re messing with me, right? Don’t mess with me before I’ve had my espresso ;)

I just use black coffee and coconut oil.
Boolean Algebra is what you linked to.
And, Or, Not, Nand, Nor...
We studied it in Digital Logic in Electrical Engineering.
In my haste I forgot the link so all can see you took a big gulp while you’re up there:

Alrighty, then.
Funny: You practically quoted right out of the chapter on ‘diets’ in my first book.
True story: My father stumbled accidentally upon this radical new ‘diet’ which had the same effect as everyone else. With nearly 100% efficacy, people lost weight. My father lost over 80 pounds.
Why don’t more people engage the ‘diet’?
People aren’t as keen to admitting themselves to a hospital as they are to follow a prescribed plan backed by oodles of fawning pseudoscience and marketing propaganda, ignoring all of the negative aspects of said ‘diet’ because in almost all cases the effects are stealthy and long-term...
Thus the Hospital ‘diet’ is the worst-kept secret in the world, the least likely to be sampled and the least popular.
My new book addresses these aspects in much more detail (top secret). It’s rather fascinating.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could cite one study that shows that KETO is harmful if properly done, by people that are reasonably healthy to start with. I have truly been looking for such a study.
Just FYI I have gone KETO since Feb. 1. I have lost 11 pounds, I swim 6 miles a week, do 2 hours of aerobics a week and walk about 6 miles a week (and have been doing this for the last 5 years). I take my fasting blood sugar every other day (just for fun). Everything looks great, I feel great.
Please consider your approach to discussion. Through this thread, youve:
- Insulted those who disagree with you;
- Appealed to authority by claiming a plurality of studies supports your condition;
- Declined to cite said studies, claiming a bias among search engines
- Claimed special knowledge of the subject but refused to share either any knowledge or the means by which someone might share your conclusions (e.g., a search phrase? Search X AND Y -Z isnt domain specialized knowledge)
If you know anything about FR youll know the community is very good at getting at truth. Just ask Dan Ra(th)er. Offering information is great; keyboard pugilism is a non-starter.
You’re citing a paper from 1922?
Hmmmm.....
Nice response. I read through all comments anticipating the first ever ZOT on a nutrition thread. Lol.
Kudos for asking, but there’s a reason I mentioned Boolean in another comment.

keto diet +dangers +study

“”Although ketogenic diets are known to be healthy, our findings indicate that there may be an increased risk of insulin resistance with this type of diet that may lead to type 2 diabetes.”
That cited dichotomy is but one example of prodigious research casting doubt on the safety of what I phrase an ‘extreme’ restrictive diet. From my chair, keto is in the same category as bulimia. I know people who are normally-intelligent engaging this ridiculous regimen because they got sucked into its hyperbole, usually from friends or business associates fawning over the weight-loss benefits and ignoring all of the negative aspects.
I have one link to precede all the others; be sure to read ‘common symptoms’.

Best of luck. I mean that. I cite the dangers in this post to help, not hurt. If others respond by viewing my comments as hostile, I redirect back to the URL above.
Insofar as other critique, I have better things to do than make citations of easily-accessible information by using the tool everyone has in front of them. But I appreciate that you bothered to ask for help. I really do. I just don’t see the sense in tossing studies to combat others’ cited studies which are reinforcing their confirmation bias. I tried that sort of outreach for several years as I sought to understand why people were seeking out desperate health solutions; that resulted in a total rewrite of my books and a fourth volume I’m reticent to write, let alone publish. It’s going to upend the medical and wellness fields and I’m going to be ostracized for destroying careers.
It is what it is. Until then, I enter the ring as I’ve done this weekend, tossing a live preserver to those who might listen.
You’ve crossed the Rubicon, my FRiend ;)

It goes on...and on...and on...and on...
How anyone could engage keto after reading just those references for longer than a 3 month period and without a doctor’s supervision is unfathomable, but easily-explained (as I do in my 4th book).
Keto is a ‘regimen’, not a lifestyle. It should be entered into with caution and medical observation. Do not make any significant lifestyle changes without logging EVERYTHING in a journal, both for your reference and that of your doctor.
I cited ‘the hospital ‘diet’’ in another comment; if you can glean details as to why people lose weight in a hospital setting, you are on the fast track to enlightenment.
You’re not reading the prior comments. I’m so done quoting him.
Read them or don’t. I could care less. This thread has the same psychology as the hysterical anti-pitbull threads here and ties in directly with the ‘climate change’ hysteria of the left.
A rather curious correlation...
