Can Cutting Carbs Actually Throw Your Heart Out of Whack?
Runner's World ^ | March 22, 2019 | Selene Yaeger, Bicycling US

Cutting carbs has become a go-to strategy for runners and cyclists looking to cut weight. Now, research suggests it might be wise to cut that out, or at least approach cutting carbs with caution.

That’s because people consuming a low proportion of their daily calories from carbohydrates like grains, fruits, and starchy vegetables appear to be significantly more likely to develop atrial fibrillation (AFib)—an irregular heart rhythm that can raise your risk of blood clots or stroke, according to preliminary research set to be presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual meeting.

The study analyzed the health records and dietary intake of nearly 14,000 people from 1985 to 2016. At the beginning of the study, none of the participants had AFib. Nearly 1,900 were diagnosed with the condition over the course of 22 years.

The researchers discovered that those who reported having a low carbohydrate intake were the most likely to develop AFib. Specifically, those who ate fewer than 45 percent of their diet from carbs were 18 percent more likely to develop AFib than those who had a moderate carb intake of 45 to 52 percent of daily calories from carbs. They were also 16 percent more likely to develop the heart rhythm disorder than those eating a high-carb diet of more than 52 percent of calories from carbs.

“Low carbohydrate diets were associated with increased risk of incident AFib regardless of the type of protein or fat used to replace the carbohydrate,” said the study’s lead author Xiaodong Zhuang, M.D., Ph.D., a cardiologist at the hospital affiliated with Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, in a press release.

Bull.
Every OTHER study has shown that a keto diet reduces inflammation and electrical instability in the nervous system (which would be a cause of afib)

One study reported that 17 of 21 subjects with type 2 diabetes were able to stop or reduce diabetes medication when carbs were limited to 20 grams a day (7)

Carbs (starches/sugars) are the triggers for inflammation and putting stress on your arteries. your body has to go into overdrive to deal with the massive amount of sugars being dumped into your blood so fast otherwise it could kill you, thats why your body dumps out a bunch of insulin to turn the sugar into fats quickly because your muscles get saturated with glucose but they can hardly take it all in in the necessary timeframe to keep you alive. so it stores it in fat to deal with at a later date.

there has to be more to it than this because sugars/starxhes are inflammatory and artery damaging.

I agree that the mere coincidence as reported (if it is valid) is not sufficient to tie a Keto type diet to A-fib.

I developed A-fib over the years and I would say if anything is related to developing a-fib it is living. I was a long distance runner when my heart murmur (the beginning of a-fib) was noticed by my doctor. But it became progressively worse as I aged.

After having fully developed chronic a-fib I started to use a low carb diet to control weight, The resuling weight loss led to a lowering of the diabetes marker A1C and a more defined heart rhythm. (Not out of a-fib, but more easily controlled with heart rate and blood pressure meds.)

I would say that reports like this should only result in closer cooperation between people with symptoms and their doctors.

As for a low carb diet, it seems to reduce the level of blood sugar. This is likely to have positive health effects.

And it also makes a difference what kind of carb it is.

High sugar/starch carbs versus slow carbs like natural fruits and veggies in normal proportions.

Terrible advice, lot of fruits are really high sugar and no they aren’t slow carbs at all, the opposite

Not all fruits are high carb. Plus many have great fiber which plays an important internal cleansing role.

I myself dont go for fruits, but go with veggies and some slow carb grain products. But there are some low sugar fruits that have great fiber for you along with great vitamins and minerals and antioxidants. And of course portioning is important and gnerally following the advice not to just eat carbs by themselves, but pairing them up with protein and fats.

I just was hearing this from a friend who said her Vet said same thing for dogs on dog food with low/no carbs. They switch their dog to different food (grain based) and it’ doing better.

I know someone who had this happen - has been dealing with a-fib for many years now. He was doing extreme low carb diet when the a-fib started, and his doctor told him they were likely related.

Everything in moderation......we are all different and you have to do what works for you.

I think the standard diet advice is total crap.

It’s insane how badly overdosed the modern diet is on carbs.

If you exercise a lot, yes eat carbs or you’ll be sluggish.
if you don’t, cut way, way, way back.

I hate to say it, but grains are carbs, unless using gluten (grain protein).

This is such crap. More and more people are adopting the Keto way of eating and it’s probaby already cutting into the bottom line for the food industry and the medical establishment. This is a sick joke
