There's Something About Space That's Triggering Herpes in Astronauts
Science Alert ^ | 18 Mar 2018 | JON CHRISTIAN

Tests show that dormant herpes viruses reactivate in more than half the astronauts who travel on the Space Shuttle and International Space station, according to new NASA research - a phenomenon the space agency says could pose problems for deep space missions.

..."In keeping with this, we find that astronaut's immune cells - particularly those that normally suppress and eliminate viruses - become less effective during spaceflight and sometimes for up to 60 days after."

A majority of the US population carries the non-genital herpes virus, mostly contracted in childhood. It is usually dormant but a weakened immune system can allow it to flare up.

Decades ago, science fiction novels used to talk about terraforming and fuel issues as the principal challenges to space travel and the settlement of other planets. It’s looking like there are even more fundamental issues that need to be addressed before we can get going. It’s not like the best doctors will be available to treat astronauts going where no man has gone before.

LOL You'll either end up with herpes or they will put on a diaper and drive cross country to kill your newest girlfriend.

Maybe enough radiation will kill the virus not much else does. Wonder what the carrier will look like when he/ she gets to Mars.

Yeah baby it was the space flight. It caused herpes. My wife would call BS so quick, I would be on Mars.

It’s a virus. If someone’s had the chickenpox, they could easily get shingles as well. They aren’t going to disqualify someone over having the chickenpox at one time.

Hi. I was not referring to chickenpox... but its cool to know I wasn’t the only person who passed 7th grade science...

I miss the old days here, when there was much less dumbassery.

There are multiple strains of herpes simplex of course...

Boomers will never stop booming though.

After owning a plane, being a pilot, living on an airport for the past 25 years and also knowing many military pilots... my guess is that there is a higher proportion of people with herpes in the astronaut community than the general public. Lack of sleep and being in a stressful situation is a trigger for herpes. I am sure that being in space is stressful for a lot of different reasons. The article mentions some of these factors. It might be something that will disqualify some for being considered for “deep space” missions. But they probably have 100 candidates for every opening they fill. If they eliminate half of them for being herpes positive they will still have plenty of other candidates.

Jack and Jill launched from MacDill
to orbit for some time.
Jill came back three months along,
but swears, “It isn’t mine.”

Herpes zoster (chickenpox/shingles) is not the same as herpes simplex (cold sores/genital herpes), JFTR.

something like 98% of people on earth have herpes- the kind that causes cold sores- and beign in space is a stress on the body- and when the body is under stress- the virus surfaces-

#53. Obviously Jack didn’t jump over the candlestick. He used it.

However, if he did jump over the candlestick, he’d be singing “Great Balls of Fire”.

Sorry to interject chicken pox/ shingles into the conversation. My point was, are they seeing evidence of any shingle symptoms too? I’ve had chicken pox and shingles. One in childhood no big deal. The other in my later days, a damned big deal. The space jokes are not surprising, I thought of a few but got curious about causes.
