For the worlds richest man, charity begins and stays at home.
Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has given only a tiny fraction of his $160 billion fortune to philanthropic causes, falling far behind fellow billionaires such as Bill and Melinda Gates and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, public records show.
Although Bezos, 55, and his estranged wife MacKenzie recently pledged $2 billion to a new charitable initiative, their previous giving amounts to a total of just over $145 million or .0906 percent far less than one percent of their net worth. Out of $100,000, that would be like spending $90.06 on charity.
The record of both Amazon and Jeff Bezos reveals that they are takers, not givers, said Queens City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, whose district includes Long Island City, where Amazon plans to set up a corporate headquarters. When they make promises of how generous they will be, I look at what they have done in the past to know what the truth really is.

So what? Is anyone obligated to give to charitable causes? Its his money and although I despise liberals its nobodys business except his what he spends it on.
He’s lobbying for that $15 an hour wage so he can hamstring hos competition while he invests in selfpay/automation.
I hate Bezos with a passion. He is the reason I quit patronizing Amazon.
But I don’t blame him a bit for not donating to charities. Most are scams which benefit their founders and executives much more than they do the supposed recipients of their largesse.
And Bezos DOES support leftist causes, just as much as Soros and Steyer do. He just doesn’t directly write checks. His donations are ‘in kind’: He runs the Washington Post completely as a propaganda organ for the left, at no charge.
His propaganda is worth billions to the left, every year.
But he loves giving other people’s money away, so he can still feel good about himself.
How much does “and his estranged wife MacKenzie,” cost?

Years ago I was talking to an elderly woman that spoke about the pastor wanting everyone to give more. She said she put in $1 a week. I made a quick judgement that she was being cheap.
Then she went through what she got from Social Security and her minimal savings account compared to her bills. By the time she was done I thought her $1 was pretty generous. (Of course it is supposed to be before all of our expenses, but still...)
On the other hand, our pastor will say he has had numerous people say to him about tithing “Well sure pastor, that probably is good for most people. But 10% of my $600,000 salary is a lot of money!”
And unemploy hundreds of thousands of others.
His online sales company has put thousands of brick and mortar local stores out of business. Those stores employed real people.
His offer of Free Shipping is a scam that cost real delivery people real money. Nothing is free.
But what choice do these people have they cant compete with the behemoth that is Amazon. I wont buy from them. If it cost me more so be it. Ill pay it.
Id rather hold a real book anyway and buy it from a local book store.
I know I will most like likely lose in the end because you cant fight progress and people are in the end lazy and will take the path of least resistance but I will not surrender my principles easily.
Really? He owns Washington Post.
I understand what you’re saying, but if Bezos didn’t do it, somebody else would have.
Well there is that.
I hate AMZ, though I was one of their earliest customers when Bezos sold only books. When my local bookstore closed a few years ago, I realized I had helped drive them out of business. No more stuff from Amazon.
McKenzie Bezos, who helped start the company, is several inches taller then Jeff....soooo...MACKENZIE IS THE AMAZON.
Should be worth several billion extra in the divorce that splits the fortune in WA, a community property state.
Use Alibris it is a worldwide consortioum of used book stores and sellers.
Thanks, I do shop at Alibris when I can’t find books I want at library or my local used bookstore, so close I can walk over.
why would they be expected to give a percentage of their net worth instead of a percentage of their earned income?
We are not financing this greedy SOB. Our New Years resolution was to quit buying from Amazon. We are saving a lot of money by eliminating all the impulse buying we were doing on that site.
lets remember that there are no really rich people that give away their money unless there is a strong incentive.....like crashing campaigns, or getting a fat tax deduction....
I understand what youre saying, but if Bezos didnt do it, somebody else would have.
And so my comment on progress.
But as to the comment of putting 10s of thousands of Americans to work, Bezos bought a company that make robots so that he could employ fewer workers.
His ultimate goal is to only have maintenance employees and few people to monitor the robots at his distribution centers.
Other than customers, Bezos cares nothing for people.
Stockholders are people, too.
