The proper comparison is not with his net worth but with his annual income. The Lord asks only for a tithe of your income, not a tithe of your net worth.

Years ago I was talking to an elderly woman that spoke about the pastor wanting everyone to give more. She said she put in $1 a week. I made a quick judgement that she was being cheap.

Then she went through what she got from Social Security and her minimal savings account compared to her bills. By the time she was done I thought her $1 was pretty generous. (Of course it is supposed to be before all of our expenses, but still...)

On the other hand, our pastor will say he has had numerous people say to him about tithing “Well sure pastor, that probably is good for most people. But 10% of my $600,000 salary is a lot of money!”
