Breathtaking video captures meteor exploding in night sky: It's 'a once-in-a-lifetime thing'

A man in the U.K. managed to capture photos and video of a lifetime, documenting the exact moment when a meteor exploded and then disintegrated above a castle.

The images and video were caught during the Orionid meteor shower on Saturday, Oct. 20, SWNS reports. 44-year-old Nick Jackson was heading to take images of Clun Castle in Shropshire when the celestial object made its debut.

Mid-way during the shoot, Jackson saw the giant meteor behind the castle and said: "I immediately thought, 'I hope that was caught in the frame.'"

"It's very unusual to see a meteor that big. Because I was shooting the star trail, I couldn't check the footage immediately," he added.

It was only when he got home did he realize that he was able to capture pictures and video of the remarkable footage.

"It was a sheer stroke of luck that I just happened to be shooting the series of images when it happened," Jackson said. "With things like that, you've got to be in the right place at the right time."

Orionid meteors occur every fall when the Earth is passing through the remnants left by Halley's Comet, SWNS reports. Halley's Comet passes by Earth once every 75 years, the most recent in 1986. It is expected to come back in 2061.

The video is comprised of 30 photos that Jackson took, which show the meteor flying into the frame and then exploding into a ball of light.

***and died exactly when it returned in 1910. Pretty weird.***

SEE! I knew the poison gas in the tail would kill us all off, except those who had gas masks or took the anti-comet pills!

I was reading the bio of Mark Twain a few weeks ago. That guy was born when Halleys comet came by earth in 1835 and died exactly when it returned in 1910. Pretty weird.

So he may not have actually witnessed either event.

I might well be. Sometime around then there was also an event with all the planets in a row. Whatever I’m remembering was in the later half of the ‘90s

You’re thinking of the Harmonica Virgins. I wonder what happened to them.

Happened to be in Guayaquil Ecuador on 4-11-86. For a $100 you could go in a 737 at 30000 feet to see the comet. I was fortunate enough to be seated to a guy from the consulate who spoke Spanish.

The plane flew around in circles for about 2 hours. I managed to see the comet through binoculars. It looked like a medium size star with a thin tail. My seatmate never saw it and neither did about half the people on the plane.

As the plane landed the pilot announced that anyone who did not see the comet could get a rain check to see it the next time.

Chaos agent , do you always speak, or type, without thinking? Or did you actually give it some thought prior?

“Halley’s 1986 apparition was the least favourable on record. “

Yup. From about as young as I can remember, I’d been looking forward to seeing it. Arrived, but viewing angle & tone were so bad I just didn’t. Grrr. Medical tech better get good enough to keep me going until next time.

Did you catch Hale–Bopp in ‘97? That was an incredible sight.

“Comet Hale–Bopp (formally designated C/1995 O1) is a comet that was perhaps the most widely observed of the 20th century, and one of the brightest seen for many decades.

Hale–Bopp was discovered on July 23, 1995, separately by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp prior to it becoming naked-eye visible on Earth.

Although predicting the maximum apparent brightness of new comets with any degree of certainty is difficult, Hale–Bopp met or exceeded most predictions when it passed perihelion on April 1, 1997.

It was visible to the naked eye for a record 18 months, twice as long as the previous record holder, the Great Comet of 1811. Accordingly, Hale–Bopp was dubbed the Great Comet of 1997.”

This meteor explosion should be named "The Man on the Flying Trapeze".

Do you always make stupid comments before maybe Googling ‘Apocalypse Troll’ and finding out it is a well-known Sci-fi novel by David Weber

It’s about what looks like an incoming meteor explosion that turns out to be a space battle between humans from the future and an alien race bent on coming back in time and wiping human civilization in the past.

Maybe you should think before you speak... or type next time.
