Police: Columbia woman reportedly mauled to death by dog

COLUMBIA, Md. —

A woman was mauled to death by a dog she adopted two weeks ago, Howard County police said.

County police said officers were called to a house Sept. 3 on Tamar Drive for a report that a woman had been mauled to death by what police described as a pit bull. Officers found Robin Conway, 64, dead in her backyard with significant injuries.

The cause of Conway's death will be determined in an autopsy by the state medical examiner.

A family member reported that Conway's husband found her injured in their yard around 7:20 p.m. with the dog standing over her. He called 911 and tied the dog to a fence post.

Police and paramedics were called and pronounced Conway dead at the scene. The dog, still attached to the post, was barking and lunging on the leash and had to be subdued by animal control officers and ultimately euthanized. A necropsy will be performed to determine if the dog had rabies or any other medical issues.

"All we know at this point is that the dog was not adopted locally. Apparently she got it from out of state. He is a pit bull. And unfortunately, as a result of this incident, he had to be euthanized," said Sherry Llewellyn, of the Howard County Police Department.

"This is one animal she thought she could save. An animal that needed to be rescued. (And that) animal unfortunately killed her," said her sister Susan Eve LeClair.

There have been no previous calls to animal control related to the address.

"They were great. I have friends that have been owners of pit bull mixes and they were great. So there was something wrong obviously with this particular dog that is not to be something to be held against all pit bulls, because there are some lovely ones out there," LeClair said.

Police do not have information about the dog's adoption except that it came from out of state.

I wouldn’t trust s pit bull as far
as I could spit.
I’ve been a bird hunter for many
years, and have come into contact
with many labs and retrievers who
were strange to me. Not a one had
shown aggression. Pits are an evil
breed, bred for one reason. That is
to kill.

Okay, lets look at that list, most are mixed breeds, appears most often with pit bulls or rottwielers. Often, too, in packs with. Remove them and this list is very short. Compare to deadly pitbull attacks almost weekly, this is nothing. Add rottwiler attacks with pitbulls and this is even more pronounced. A pitbull and rottwiler list over the same periods would be hundreds, maybe thousand-plus. Thanks for confirming the obvious.

But, when a golden retriever or border collie goes on a blood thirsty people killing mauling spree, the media is silent..... I see what you did there. OTOH..Im waiting for the postings here on FR ... Its the owners fault! There are no bad pits..
just bad owners.

This is why I am a cat person.

I go out running, and there is one area of the neighborhood with several dog owners. I worry that one of the barking, lunging dogs will pull its leash out of its owner’s hands, or that one will jump over the fence.

Cats want you dead ... you can see it in their eyes ... but they just can’t be bothered.

Thank you for listing 20 years of non pitbull dog attacks to get 30 deaths which is about equal what pits have done in the past 18 months. Once again your point is well thought out and reseached. B-Z!

FWIW, until the results of the autopsy are made public, we don’t know that the dog was the cause of death.

Right now, all I see in my cats’ eyes is hunger. They are thinking at me, “Feed me now or you will have no peace to read FreeRepublic.”

You are an “inherently dangerous animal”.

No, they shouldn’t. There are over 3 million pit bulls in the country right now. Your odds of being killed by a pit bull are significantly lower than dying of many illnesses, dying in a car accident, etc. Yeah, there are some bad pit bulls, but they are also probably the most abused breed & breed most in shelters in the country. I can only speak for my experience with pit bulls, but the pit bulls I have interacted with at rescue events and at the animal shelter have been incredibly gentle, sweet dogs.

I saw the TV interview of the sister. She seemed remarkably calm for someone whose sister had been mauled to death. I know people react differently to grief, but she seemed too composed.

Before the 1980s Pit Bull attacks were rare. It was Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds and Sled type dogs that made the top of the killing list. Meanwhile, Pit Bulls have been here longer than any of those other breeds. Then in the 1980s Pits started gaining in popularity with irresponsible people. In that same time period, we gained a lot immigrants, legal and illegal from Ctrl and South America. People from cultures where dog fighting is popular.

Irresponsible Pit Bull ownership and population exploded. Now you have some Pit Bull lines that go back several generations having been bred to be mean and kept by idiots.

That’s why we have so many Pit Bull attacks.

From everything I’ve read, pitt bulls are incredibly sweet and gentle dogs. Which may snap at any moment and attack and kill anyone around them, including their owners, their owner’s kids, and anyone who comes within attack range of them. Living with a pitt bull is like living with an open barrel of gunpowder while being a chain smoker. Sooner or later it will kill you.

Once again you admit, people do die from pitbull attacks and by your logic, you are much more likely to be killed by a pitbull compared to being killed by their pugs, golden retrievers, yorkies, Chihuahuas, greyhounds, poms, corgis , bassethounds, etc. Pitbulls are not an illness, the only illness is in the brains of anyone who thinks they are getting a kind and gentle pet.

Your logic crosses all kinds of barriers including a strawman argument ,apples to oranges comparison and circular logic
