Without search, AdWords would be worthless.
When you use Google, or any other ad-supported site, you should know that you are the product, not the customer. The site is getting paid by its advertisers for exposing you to the advertisers' pitches. Of course, you won't pay attention unless the site is useful, fun, or interesting. Thus, making sure it's the above is the site's owner's mission. This phenomenon is basic to media and far predates the internet.
In Google's case, the attraction is fast, accurate search. Google built it, and they came. And the advertisers fork over big time for access to that audience.
And why did they ignore Yahoo?
Yup.
Yahoo was probably the web's original search engine. Except it wasn't. It started out as an attempt to categorize the web, librarian card-catalog style, an approach doomed to failure.
Even before Google, it was obvious that search, the more AI the better, not classification, was the way to go. It was obvious that whoever did best at search would win.
Of course, Yahoo abandoned the librarian approach fairly early, but not before real search engines took the lead.
Google's timing was fortunate. It was able to snap up talent laid off by the likes of Yahoo in the 2000 bubble bursting.
IMHO, Bing seems to have a more LEFTIST agenda than Google. Clearly both are partisan.
I use StartPage. Very happy with it. Used to use Google. Haven’t used it for years.
I think Yahoo bought then retired Alta Vista, which was THE best search engine I ever used. Stupid move.
Thanks for posting that. I use ixquick and find that it is adequate, but barely. When I really want to find something, I reluctantly use Google. I will try a couple of those other search engines next time I need to search.
I absolutely despise Bing. It never works for me, especially at work!

Bing is better than Google but I have been using DuckDuckGo for a while and it does just fine.
I’ve tried several others... none come close to being as user friendly and efficient as Google.

Bing is worthless... the few times i’ve used it its like wtf? half of what normally I would see on google is missing..
I’ve been using WebCrawler for about a year now. Matter of fact, WebCrawler is the very first search engine I used back in 1997. I was surprised to see that it was still out there.
Love most of the daily photos of Bing..and for search privacy..duck duck go. Haven’t tried the others..
I’ve been using bing for a long time now, mostly because it’s two less letters to type than google.
I’ve used www.startpage.com for years. Great results; total privacy ; and no ads. What more can you ask?
I can easily replace Google, though I cheat and use StartPage which is a Google prxy that that gets results from Google without providing my information.
YouTube (owned by Google) and Google Maps are MUCH harder to replace.

I like the short easy-to-type name. It comes up fast with a very nice full-screen picture that changes daily.
Do you suppose there’s company underneath all of the “visible” search engines that provides the database that is searched. It’s hard to believe that all of the visible search engines created and are maintaining their own database.
