A lot of those ‘alternatives’ use Google or Bing. Yahoo uses Bing.
Google Advanced Search seems the best for research that is more serious.
A good VPN subscription, Tracker blockers like Ghostery and then add Duck Duck Go All work well together and is a fair mix to use.
IMHO data mining isn’t just google like search engines its the entire internet. Only one tracker “”Google Analytics”” pops up even here on FR every time you click on a link, preview or post. Thats the lone tracker detected by my ghostery here at FR. Don’t believe me, PLEASE get the free “ghostery” OR a like product and see for yourself what trackers they block .....
Stay Safe...
Thanks...and thanks to all posters. Info wars and info gathering wars BUMP!
Gonna read this carefully. I hate Google.
Correct. The "trick" is to find one that does NOT use Google. Otherwise all you're doing is using a different front door to execute google searches.
>>> (Bing) ..... you think Google is liberal, but you haven’t researched Microsoft’s politics, which are even more liberal than Google’s! <<<
That may be so, and plenty of us know about this.
BUT.
Bing search hasn’t reflected the blatant bias that’s found in Google’s “algorithm”.
Thank you, it’s time we vote with our feet...
...and fingertips.
Very good summary and review here. Thank you. I have used Duck Duck for years now. But they are all “enhanced by Google”. Why? Why can’t they spider themselves? Is computing power the problem? Does Google hold a patent on search engine ware?
Someone needs to make a serious competitive effort against Google but there is a unfair advantage somewhere...
I stopped using Google years ago and went to Bing. I like the pictures on the screen each day. And they actually have nice, appropriate pictures for US holidays like Memorial Day and 4th of July.
I use Dogpile whenever possible.
Try Mapquest instead of Googlemaps.
DuckDuckGo works well for 95% of my searches. Every so often, I’ll use google for a more detailed search.
IMHO, this is the beginning of the end for Google.
Bfl
I used MapQuest in the old days. It is not in the same league. Apple Maps (despite some hilarious early screw ups) on my iPod works better than the frustrating MapQuest.
There is a great piece circa mid-1990s called How Software Companies Die that nails the rise and fall of these entities. While I encourage you to read the whole thing, in short:
...you can domesticate programmers the way beekeepers tame bees. You can't exactly communicate with them, but you can get them to swarm in one place and when they're not looking, you can carry off the honey.
...(eventually) the marketers get control...(and) are baffled that each new iteration of their software loses market share as the code bloats and the bugs proliferate.
Got to get some better packaging. Yeah, that's it.
Ping
I use ixquick. Learned about it here on FR
AdWords is used by people that wish to put advertising on their own website, whether google was used to get there or not. Google dominates in this kind of service .
