Yesterday we reported that Donald Trump and Ted Cruz seemed to be preparing to go to war with each other. A few hours later, however, Cruz himself responded on Twitter by saying that, although the media would love to see a cage match between himself and the billionaire businessman, he won't play along.
That could -- and by all means should -- have been the end of it.
Sadly it is not. Trump can also read polls and understands that Cruz poses a serious threat to him in Iowa. And so the cage match has started, whether Cruz likes it or not:
"The New Yorker spent more time on Friday poking Cruz for opposing ethanol subsidies, which are widely popular there. Independent groups there are beginning to spend money against Cruz for his position, which Trump told a questioner was "anti-Iowa." Cruz says the subsidies are an example of government interference in the free market."
The Donald literally said:
"With the ethanol, really, he's got to come a long way, 'cause right now he's for the oil. But I understand it, oil pays him a lot of money. He's got to be for oil, right? But I'm with you. I'm self-funding. I have no oil company. I have no special interest."
Of course The Donald is a special interest, but it would be rather inconvenient for him to point that out. And so he's playing self-funding card once again, hoping it'll give him the edge, while defending crony capitalism.
Trump apparently thinks that he can win Iowa by defending ethanol subsidies. This is what he does: he tries to buy people's votes. The difference with Cruz is stark: the senator from Texas chooses principles over short-term political gain.

Don’t worry - you’ll soon get some explanations of why ethanol schemes are really conservative and patriotic, and how only RINOs and the GOPe would ever oppose envirowelfare.
Great points. Good to see the distinctions between Cruz and Trump being made clear. Cruz: principled conservative. Trump: big government pandering blowhard who just has to make personal insults rather than just discussing policies.
Already happening on a previous thread about this. One FReeper suggested they’re a good thing because it creates jobs. I guess Solendra just needed to receive more subsidies.

Why is it necessary to lie? There is only one such poll. The other most recent IA poll found Trump with a 13pt lead.
As I just posted on another thread, re the lone poll that found Cruz leading within the MOE:
Monmouth/Patrick Murray has become famous for detecting ‘surges’ no other poll can locate. Monmouth/Murray discovered two seperate ‘surges’ for Carson...right before Carson tanked.
I am calling this media bias because I heard Trump last night (can not recall all of it right now) but there was more to his comment then what is presented in the article....That is how the left plays, just tell 1/2 the story which makes it sound like something it is not!

Excellent point. I didn’t watch the rally, but I read multiple firsthand accounts. All agreed that Trump was very warm and complimentary toward Cruz.
Cruz opposes ethanol subsidies but is in favor of subsidies for the oil industry.
That’s the only thing that Trump pointed out.
Then he said that Cruz takes a lot of money from the oil industry.
His point was not that subsidies are good. His point was that Cruz is for sale.
Cruz is correct.
This article is written by people that are very confused.
Ted was right in principle to oppose federal government subsidies of ethanol. Donald is right to point out that he is not controlled by the oil industry, that Ted is influenced by that industry. The writer then turns and twist by declaring Donald Trump also represents special interests but fails to explain further, which I suspect is due to the fact that there is ‘no *there* there’.
I think the press just wants to see a fight because it’s something to write about. The persons that make their vocation in the press cannot get to real facts and stories because it requires money, work and especially time, so they resort to creating facts and stories that they think will keep their business in the public eye. In other words, their product is cheap and not worth the material it is printed on or the bandwidth it consumes. Unfortunately for them, Ted Cruz is far too smart to engage in their fantasy embellishments.
Trump knows that sending Cruz down in a ball of flames will win him friends in the GOPe who hate Cruz passionately.
Cruz always needed Plan B to deal with Trump but we haven’t seen it.
Oil drillers are allowed to deduct capital expenditures from their earnings for tax purposes.
Might as well call homeowners deducting mortgage payments from their earnings for tax purposes as a "subsidy" too, if you enjoy abusing the English language.
Don’t forget about how a new government welfare program to help collage students pay off their tuition is some how conservative.
How reopening NSA’s bulk data collection and their abuses is conservative.
Trowing Israel and BiBi under the bus is some how conservative because BiBi criticized Trump.
Don’t forget about more BIG government in Trump’s willingness to expand more government welfare in a new program to help collage students pay off their collage loans in which Rand Paul had the very same idea early this year.
It creates jobs repairing the engines it ruins
