Update 5/15/15: I've clarified some of my findings at the bottom of this post.
I've owned the 2015 MacBook for just over a month now. I've had a remarkably good time using it so far, and just yesterday I decided to upgrade my installation of Windows 8.1 to the Windows 10 Insider Preview. I had tried it out a couple months earlier through a virtual machine, and at the time I wasn't sure I wanted it as my main operating system. But after taking the plunge, I'm very happy to be using it. I wanted to record a few thoughts about it for others curious about the new OS, especially its usability and performance on this new hardware.
Setting up was easy. I opted to install from Windows 8.1, which still installs a fresh copy of the operating system, but it's easier than creating installation media from scratch. I did, however, make sure to re-download Apple's latest Boot Camp drivers through Boot Camp Assistant before installing. These saved to an external USB drive that I left plugged in during the installation. Things proceeded typically. If you've ever installed Windows 8.1 on a Mac, you'll recognize the process; not a lot has changed. Fortunately, upon finishing the installation, the Boot Camp drivers were automatically recognized on the USB drive and installed, which is what is supposed to happen. Unfortunately, not every driver installed successfully the first time around. For example, I was able to modify volume with Apple's native UI popup, but brightness (which uses the built-in Windows switcher) didn't change. The all-important system tray application for modifying trackpad settings and quickly booting back into OS X also wasn't present.

*snicker* Thanks for the laugh, mate. *grin*
So someone pays the Apple premium to buy a Mac, and then loads windows on it? Someone has more time than sense.
umm, if you wanted to install W10, why do you need a Macbook? This is like homo marriage which Tim Cook advocates.
Eh. No worse than being forced to buy a PC with the ‘doze OS pre-installed and reconfiguring it to run a ‘nix distro instead. Just interesting to view the comparisons on identical (actually, the exact same machine) platforms.
What a cluster f*ck. Only true computer geeks are going to sit through this sort of crap. The rest of us have a life to live.
I refuse to bother trying moving from Win 7 to go through anything that requires USB drives, God knows how long to complete, new drivers to be found, etc? Why the hell should I bother?
More so, why would a Mac user with their supposedly superior OS want to bother? I admit, I am stuck with MS because of software, but geez, this tap dancing described here is insane unless you are addicted to computer fiddling.
Too many years ago the things became tools, not toys.
Half my students now have Mac, so I can seamlessly go back and forth between the two systems. This is why I went with VMWare instead of Bootcamp.
I do 90%+ of everything in OS 10, but I have the ability to use Windows when needed without reaching for another machine.
You have hit upon one of the many reasons I prefer linux to any other OS: no need to "load" any drivers or specialized software. Support for the majority of hardware is built into the OS itself by some very dedicated and professional coders.
No need to perform search after search to find the specific driver software applicable to your particular OS (mac/'doze) before you can use your hardware. Linux recognizes it and uses it from boot-up.
Actually, we already had a thread posted about this kid's blog over the weekend: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3290202/posts
The kid only was evaluating graphics rendering speed, and at the end of his updated comments from 5/15 he stated:
"...Overall, UI speed is only one metric of speed, and articles claiming that I found Windows 10 to be faster than OS X are missing the point..."What I commented on that earlier thread can be summarized as:
But if Alex, or someone else, comes out with an article reporting test results that use a standardized, widely respected benchmarking utility suite, and can publish some reproducible results comparing the speed of Windows vs. OS X on the Mac, I'll be VERY interested in pinging the list about that.
Otherwise, we're just asking for yet another tomato-throwing and name-calling contest, and we don't need that. :-)
I have three different Mac computers (a new Mini, and old Mini, and an old MacBook) that ALL are BootCamped and running Windows 7 in the second partition.
They bloody SCREAM running Windows 7. I love 'em.
I also like running them with OS X. It happens I'm posting this comment from the new Mini, under OS X 10.9. It moves right along, too.
Happy happy, joy joy. :-)
Thanks for the info, mate! Admin Mod, please close and label this thread as Closed, Previously Posted and everyone can follow the link dayglored has so helpfully provided for more info, thanks.
Cheers! :)
My son bought a Macbook Air or something for college. First thing he did was load Windows Office on it! I just looked at him with “you are such an idiot” look. Although I guess the picture is good for watching Netflix, which is what it sounds like these college kids use it for most. And porn I suppose.
In any case I hope this one stays up, if for no other reason than Viking2002's excellent analogy about the sandpaper and the wildcat's ass. LOL!
Right, stop it now! It’s too bloody late for Me to be laughing so hard and the neighbors need to sleep SOMETIME!
No worries; the previous thread will do, and it’s not like I am looking to set some kind of thread-starting record after all. More info on the previous thread, then we needs must go and refer to it. :)
Cheers!
Why bother with the trash that is doooohs when you have a Mac book pro?
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
I challenge the members of the Apple ping list to each donate at least $10 each to the latest Freepathon. I HAVE donated $100. Many members of the Apple Ping list are already rising to the challenge. Join them. Let's show the power of the Apple Ping list in supporting Freerepublic!
There’s a difference between loading Office on a Mac - makes sense if the folks you deal with are on office as well - and running the Windows operating system on a Mac. You can get a machine designed to run Windows significantly cheaper. And you lose the supposed (historically real, but now much smaller) benefits of the Apple operating system.
I work on a Mac but have Windows installed on my bootcamp. Why? Work. My industry is all Windows based. I can either buy Dell and put up with Windows or partition the Windows to only one side of my drive and use it as needed.
Bottom line... there are reasons beyond the enthusiast.
