SUNDAY UPDATE: Universal's "Despicable Me 2" nearly triples the dismal $48.9 million earned by the Johnny Depp Western, posting a dazzling five-day North American debut of $142.1 million.
Failing to fire off a silver bullet, Disney's The Lone Ranger posted a grim five-day debut of $48.9 million, far from enough to make up for the high cost of the Johnny Depp-Armie Hammer Western.
Lone Ranger -- costing at least $250 million to produce -- marks the summer's third major disappointment after Will Smith tentpole After Earth and Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum's White House Down -- both Sony pics -- and is almost certain to pose a major financial headache for Disney. White House Down fell to No. 6 in its second weekend, falling 47 percent to $11.2 million for a domestic total of $50.1 million.

well someone is getting paid for work on these film. /s
One of my brothers has made a lot of money leasing horses, wagons and other equipment to the movie industry.
In the office where I work at, where most are action movie junkies, I asked around ‘who's going to go see Lone Ranger?’ Not one said they were.
Even Will Smith got more respect from this crew.
But hey! Wait a minute! There's a demographic which could save this movie! Parents bringing kids! Just in case that might have saved the movie, Bruckheimer pulled all the stops to ensuring it was so utterly violent and fast paced that few parents would consider bringing kids.
The paltry $45 million dollar opening weekend doesn't even cover the media buy for advertising of this bomb. And the reason was: No one thought to think of who would want to see this movie.
The American public still wants G-rated family entertainment, even though it too has been corrupted with scatological “humor” (e.g., fart jokes). Not enough people who want to see a PG-13 mess with Johnny Drop mumbling his way through another idiotic portrayal. Clayton Moore & Jay Silverheels remain the definitive duo.
The movie should have been titled Tonto.
No matter the costume, Depp runs like a girl.
He wears a mask to hide his shame for our treatment of the Indians. You can bet the dumb White racist was a bumbling fool.
You would think they would notice the connection between their tearing Americans down and small box offices>?
Pray for America to Wake Up
Ha, ha — Johnny Depp auto corrected to Johnny Drop. Coincidence?

Here is a quote:
“Steven Spielberg on Wednesday predicted an “implosion” in the film industry is inevitable, whereby a half dozen or so $250 million movies flop at the box office and alter the industry forever.”
Whatever you think about Spielberg, his thoughts what this all means for the movie industry are quite interesting—something big will have to change and he has some predictions.
Last year Disney made “John Cater”, who is he? A big budget flop.
Gee: What do ALL of these movies have in common.....
hmm...
How about over indulgent anti American Obama worshipping Hollyweird uber libs?
Maybe people ARE starting to make that connection...

Bombs happen. Meanwhile June set a record with $1.25 billion in total grosses.
I will give him credit for his performance in Donnie Brasco, which was a decent film.
Problem with that speech is that Spielberg forgot he’s an outlier. His success rate is ridiculous, way above industry norm. There’s a dozen movies with serious budgets that bomb every year, it’s how the industry goes, but enough big budget movies succeed, and enough small budget movies unexpectedly succeed, to offset the failures. Spielberg has the golden touch, his least successful movies still usually break even, so he doesn’t seem to realize just how regular bombs are.
dont these people deserve a government bailout
Yes. Grandparents who remember the radio and TV series think maybe they can take their grandchildren. Then they watch the trailer full of explosions, see a weird Tonto with a dead bird on his head, and look at the PG-13 rating. Game over.
Disney is being run by idiots. If Walt were alive, he would clean house.
There are good movies, but they're not given equal time in the cinema frenzy hoping for the next billion dollar blockbuster. A smart movie industry would go for their most loyal audience (if there's anything we can stand)....families with children up to age 15 or so and seniors and other real adults.
PS: The current Star Wars movie is good.
“because the latter hasn’t been able to tell stories and make consumers care about the characters”
I’m not sure what Spielberg’s getting at. With a game you can make your own character and tell your own stories.
