The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

“I like to add soluble Miracle grow fertilizer once a week.”

Thank you for this post. I was wondering what to add to potting soil after that six months. I was going to have to look for what needed to be added to keep feeding the plants. I’ll use soluble Miracle Gro. You just saved me having to look for something. The problem with the beans, is, they are in the ground with no added fertilizer. I suppose there is no way to add fertilizer on the top of the dirt and it filters down to the roots?

“Tomatoes love to make roots at each joint, so just cut off a healthy looking branch, and pull off the lower leaves, leave a few leaves on top and bury the rest of the plant in soil or stick in a jar of water till you get roots, then plant in soil.”

Didn’t know you could do that. You know so much about gardening, when you go to sleep I’m going to take out your brain and add it to mine. Every week you say something about gardening I didn’t know.

“Well it worked for most of my tomatoes.”

So, I could take a cutting off the strong cheery tomato plant and root it in my potting soil mix and have another of that fine tomato plant?

If it were not for Johnny, you, and the rest of you on this thread, I wouldn’t have been able to grow anything. I started with zero knowledge. My parents knew, of course, I didn’t like dirt even as a little child. They would be surprised and laughing that I’m growing plants.

No, its a light shade of green and the stems come off of the main stock and go straight up. Like I said, they remind me of a candle obra. Actually, there really isn’t a main trunk of distinction .

It must be that time of year. My mailbox was stuffed with garden porn today. Hate to tell 'em, but I'm done buying stuff this year. Maybe next year.

Turns out that's not quite the case, most honored ancient one (I'm going to have to up security around here).

You can scatter some MiracleGrow(tm) around the root system and lightly water it in.

Don't get flippant with me, sonny boy - I can find where you live. I'll get the fertilizer this coming week and do that.

Well, getting the last of my SEEDS in today. Finally clear weather two days in a row, so the mud is just now barely dried enough to work.

Any bets on IF I get any veggies out of this fiasco?

BTW, I prefer to plant seed to soil because here I find I have far less/no trouble with diseases.

I do have 14 miserable stunted tomato plants that I started indoors that I put out 10 days ago. They made it through the terrible downpour of two inches of rain the other night.

And if it all fails completely, I’ll have a lesson about the ant and the grasshopper personalized just for me.

Which, find out where I live or scatter fertilizer? That actually matters, because you are dangerous, regardless of your extreme advanced age. (Ducking and running)

I'll never get over being a 12 year old rapscallion. That part of me lives on. ;)

Here, I start everything inside. It's Texas, and it's harsh out there until the plants get large enough.

You have a very narrow window to work with. That is not in my experience, so I can't offer any advice. I can offer prayers up, but that's the best I can do. I ran out of canned jalapenos last year, and had to buy store-bought. I understand lean years, and try to ensure that I can enough to get me through those times. I don't always manage.

In another post on this thread, you said you were going to, or about to, or something like that, plant tomato seed inside. Have you done that yet?

Don’t miss me on this as I need to do it when you do. I’ll try to grow large heirloom tomatoes this time in the large containers I got for that. I have “Mortgage Lifter Red” to try. Envelope says, “Improved version of Radiator Charlie’s Mortgage Lifter”. 80-83 days.

Monday morning, in a sterilized egg carton (18 pack) with sterilized potting soil. Water from the bottom only. I can send pictures of the setup, if you like.

I need a script to do a julian date conversion for from day x (maybe today, maybe Monday) to the first frost date.

We're over 120 days from our first frost date.

The other thing you need to learn is determinate vs indeterminate. I do two plantings because my romas are determinate.

More research for you. It's always time for school for midshipmen.

My daughters hate that phrase, btw.

I was going to use paper cups with punctured bottoms and clear plastic tray underneath with water in it and I have a bag of Miracle Gro seed starter I recently got for the planting medium. Will this work?

Mortgage Lifter is indeterminate. I also have warm and/or warmer weather longer than you do where you live. I don't know how long this plant could keep reproducing but I'll know after cold weather does hit. Sometimes we go through December and into January before it's really cold which it was this past year. Winter didn't really happen this time. Anyway, I'll plant a few seeds to get two of this plants growing to see what happens.

I'll have plenty of that seed left for spring. I also have another tomato for spring. It's Cosmonaut Volkov. Also have more Wild Galapgos to try again (those seeds got eaten).

You know you can have some of any of these heirloom seeds. I have many others besides tomatoes I just got so maybe I should send you a list and you make out a free shopping list AFTER YOU APOLOGIZE FOR CALLING ME NAMES JUST BECAUSE I AM ANCIENT.

Will work.

I grow one type of tomato. Roma. Because it works for me, and it works for feeding crowds. I don't want to branch out.

Your inde may produce until November or December, depending on the weather.

I am sorry that you feel bad because you are old. ;)

That's as close as it comes. Don't bother telling me I'm an a-hole. I'm aware of that. ;)

More tobacco that had to be harvested today. It's getting big. And the season has not really started, yet.

Please note that I am actually wearing something that approximates pants.

I’ve had Kentucky Wonder grow eight feet high (the size of the lattice I’ve provided them along the east wall of the house) before producing. I’ve never had any luck growing them in the summer, however, that’s when I switch to yard longs.

Make sure to save a couple of those sweet potatoes to start your slips for next year. And once they get going you’ll have plenty of extra leaves to eat.

About to send you free shopping list by regular email. You may want some of these heirloom veggies.

Sometimes I think out of the box and sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't.

One time it didn't work: I was teaching 5th grade in the poorest school in Texas. There were holes in the windows and snow would come in. When we would get there, kids and I had to keep on coats for some time before it was warm enough to take them off. We all wore plastic overshoes over our shoes to try to keep feet warm.

I thought I could help this problem, and brought an electric heater one morning. The kids could gather around the heater to warm up. I did that and not long after the heater was on a bit, the principal came barreling in the room and said I had blown every electric circuit in the school including the lunch room and they couldn't make lunch!

Had to take the heater home.
