(CNN) -- Twinkies. Nutty bars. Powdered donuts.
For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.
His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.
The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.
For a class project, Haub limited himself to less than 1,800 calories a day. A man of Haub's pre-dieting size usually consumes about 2,600 calories daily. So he followed a basic principle of weight loss: He consumed significantly fewer calories than he burned.
His body mass index went from 28.8, considered overweight, to 24.9, which is normal. He now weighs 174 pounds.

This is just as stupid as the guy who ate nothing but McDonald’s food.
There is no magic to dieting. When calories in < calories spent, you lose weight. Sure you can lose weight on twinkies, but you can also foul up your system.
“His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most — not the nutritional value of the food. “
His premise explains that. He is not looking at nutrition or “what is good for the body” he is purely looking at weight loss.
Hmmm. So cancer feeds on sugar, hydrogenated oil, and partially hydrogenated oil. That is what this professor ate all day. More power to him, but no thanks from me. Also, I have PCOS so the only way I lose weight is following a low GI diet. I just think the low GI diet is a healthy lifestyle. I don’t care about what the government created food pyramid says.
“His premise explains that. He is not looking at nutrition or what is good for the body he is purely looking at weight loss.”
And I’m saying it’s so obvious that it’s stupid. If I have a 5 gallon bucket filled with sand, and I put one cup in, and take 2 cups out, sooner or later, I’ll empty the bucket.
I am just amazed that anyone would feel a need to demostrate such a simple concept in such an odd way.
What I found more interesting was that his good cholesterol went up and his bad cholesterol went down. How can that possibly be???
It's not so simple in a lot of people's minds these days. I'm convinced that the food police are convincing millions of people that certain types of foods make you fat rather than the number of calories you ingest/burn.
This experiment could be very enlightening to a lot of otherwise misled people.
Also, my husband and 2 yo son eat this way as well since that is how I cook. Thank goodness my husband is a health nut! You should see how long it takes us to grocery shop, with both of us reading labels for hydrogenated oils, soy, and MSG! We are healthier for this, overall. We rarely get sick and our son is better behaved than other children. We ordered applesauce for him at Applebees on a rare dinner out and he was a mess the rest of the evening. He was throwing tantrums, didn’t want to listen to us, wouldn’t go to bed, etc. I called Applebees and the manager read the applesauce ingredients to me: high fructose corn syrup.
Weight loss alone changes the cholesterol ratios in many people.
And Im saying its so obvious that its stupid. If I have a 5 gallon bucket filled with sand, and I put one cup in, and take 2 cups out, sooner or later, Ill empty the bucket.
The robber drug companies that make Lipitor and Crestor are not going to like the results of this man’s experiment.
Someday people will wonder why we paid so much attention to high cholesterol, particularly when the results of long-term use of these drugs increase the chance of dementia. I’d much rather die of a heart attack than Alzheimer’s.
Okay, thanks! That was the only answer I could come up with but wasn’t sure.
What is our brains made of? Cholesterol!
Yep, it's like economics, if you spend more than you have, you are going into deep debt.
The only diet that I know works and is counter-intuitive is the Atkins Diet.
It's a no carb, but no calorie limit diet and it really works, but it makes your breath smell like a sewer full of rotten road kill and when you eat your first piece of bread you gain 46 pounds in one day.
Other than those two small side effects, it's great.
Rush talked about this yesterday. It was in the context this being a slap at Chewbaca's (FLOTUS) screeds concerning obesity among the "poor" being caused by "food deserts" - i.e. no "good" stores with "good" food existing the ghetto.
The famous one who ate the McDonald’s food pigged out on Big Macs, egg McMuffins and soft drinks the whole time, taking in a huge number of calories every day along with massive amounts of fat and sugar. He did get sick. But this was a big stunt to publicize his girlfriend’s vegan detox business.
There was another guy who also ate at McDonald’s for a month. He ate moderately and varied his diet to include the salads, milk, juice, fruit, etc. He lost weight and was quite healthy by the end.
I refuse to go back on the Pill because it masked my metabolism disorders due to PCOS. I see so many young girls that are average sized, yet they have guts. They are going on the Pill because they have irregular periods, and this is masking their problems as well. People are eating junk: There is a difference between calories and quality calories. I now eat like my grandparents did and my PCOS is under control. I am ovulating for the first time probably in my life. There are many “metabolism disorders” out there, but they are caused by the junk that they are putting in their mouths. I would love to know side effects of this professors diet.
The key to Adkins is that without carbs your body goes into ketosis - and starts burning fat, rather than carbs, to produce energy. One other effect of ketosis is that it suppresses appetite ... and through that effect, Atkins becomes yet another calories in .lt. calories out diet.
Been on it for 11 weeks and I'm down 28 lbs ... I'm not eating anywhere near the number of calories I used to.
On a side note, I've experienced something I would have never thought possible - I am sick of bacon.
Because it’s all random anyway?
