The key to Adkins is that without carbs your body goes into ketosis - and starts burning fat, rather than carbs, to produce energy. One other effect of ketosis is that it suppresses appetite ... and through that effect, Atkins becomes yet another calories in .lt. calories out diet.
Been on it for 11 weeks and I'm down 28 lbs ... I'm not eating anywhere near the number of calories I used to.
On a side note, I've experienced something I would have never thought possible - I am sick of bacon.
I lost 35 pounds on a no carb (less than 28 grams/day)diet. As one of the other posters pointed out, it is very difficult not to gain weight rapidly when you start eating some carbs again. I had to seriously restrict carb intake to retain the weight loss.
