Drug addicts in the US are being paid to get sterilised so that thousands of children are "saved from growing up within a damaged environment," a media report has said.
American charity organisation, Project Prevention, in North Carolina state, has stopped more than 3,500 drink and drug addicts from having children by paying them up to £200 to seek permanent forms of contraception such as an IUD implant or full sterilisation, the Independent reported on Saturday.
Encouraging drug addicts to seek sterilisation saves thousands of children from growing up within a damaged environment, Barbara Harris, founder of the organisation, was quoted as saying.
Harris, meanwhile, has adopted five children born to crack-addicted mothers.
The organisation now is reportedly planning to set up a base across the Atlantic in Britain, a move that has been vehemently criticised by the UK's drug addiction experts.
Andrew Horne, director of Addaction, one of Britain's largest addiction charities, condemned the American charity's approach.
"There is no place for Project Prevention in the UK because their practices are morally reprehensible and irrelevant," Horne said.
"Our first-hand experience shows that people can make positive changes with the right support - both for themselves and for their children. In fact, many of our clients stopped using drugs because they became a parent," he was quoted as saying.

New Flash, Millions of welfare moms are being sterilized ...oops, not!
We must be in worse economic shape than I thought.
The more I see, the more I support programs like this.
If you get any kind of benefit from the government, you should take measures to keep your stupidity from affecting future generations.
If we’re not going to abolish welfare in our country, I want the same thing for welfare recipients here.
Coming soon, Obama anti-racism program with mandated sterilization for anyone who’s guilty of being a racist, a Republican, or has attended a Tea Party event....
Yeah. Great idea. Set the precedent and next you get to sterilize the “mentally ill”. Then the “feeble-minded”. Then whoever else.
Eugenics continues to rear its ugly head. We didn’t kill enough of these eugenics psychos when we defeated Germany because there were/are a heck of a lot of them in the USA.
Nazis at work. They did the same thing.
Sorry, but I agree with this 100%.
My daughter works in a level one NICU and the crack babies are so very sad. The same women keep showing up with another child needing months of hospital care and looking to a life of health problems if they even survive. Most don’t that come in real premature, and the time and emotion the staff puts in to try to sustain life is overwhelming.
These NICU people are angels
As long as it is voluntary I don’t have a problem with it.
“The Shadows are darkest when the Sun is brightest.”
(Paraphrased from Glenn Beck)
This sounds like a metaphor for the existence of evil ideologies in the US. There sure are a lot of extremists in the US...
I’m more concerned about the precedent. Eugenics is a virulent poison. Given this nose in the tent the “option” will eventually become a mandate and the numbers of people “qualifying” for sterilization will expand. As always.
You make a good point. The sterilization project is something that was encouraged during the Eugenics craze in this country back in the early 20th century. In fact, that is how Margaret Sanger , the founder of Planned Parenthood, got started. She also believed in the sterilization of what was then called the “unfit”. ALthough it is tempting to think the world would be better off if the drug addicts were sterilized, the process would never stop with them. It would quickly spread to any social undesirable which, depending upon the era, could be anyone not in step with the prevaling governmental philosophy.
Nobody's being forced to do anything. If you are an addict, you are offered a reward of a few hundred bucks if you go to be sterilized.
Drug addicts being paid to get sterilised in US and UK
Replace the drug addicts in this title with Progressives and I will gladly ante up more tax money for this government program.
Great. Take a collection and pay them yourself. Leave me out of it.
Please. This programme is voluntary. And condemning something because the Nazis did something similar could be applied to many things which are actually sensible. The death penalty, imprisonment, military service, taking children camping and teaching them outdoorsmanship etc etc...
I fully support the idea of voluntarily sterilizing drug addicts and preventing them from conceiving children that will either be aborted or condemned to a life of abuse, neglect and excruciating misery... Some of which they will later go on to inflict on innocent people as a result of their dysfunctional childhood.
Call me back if they suggest making it compulsory or coercive. Until then, great idea....
I hate to say it but I do to. There are just some groups that shouldn't reproduce and, unfortunately, these groups tend to reproduce a lot.
The crack babies from the 80s are all grown up now and we can't build prisons fast enough to protect us from them.
You didn't read the article, That's exactly what's happening. A private organization is paying addicts to get sterilized. No government is involved.
The dirty little not so secret is that the US had a triving eugenics program in the US in the late 20’s and early 30’s. I have a 1930’s set of encyclopedias that expounds on the wonderful eugenic programs an how it would enhance the progress of the country and help humanities future. The first time I read it, my jaw dropped. Then I realized this all came from the progressives of the day. Things have not changed much.
BTW - What will happen when a few sterilized druggies get cleaned up and want kids? Will they sue? I am sure lawyers are already figuring out how to file lawsuits.
