What are you doing to prepare?

Posted on 04/02/2010 5:05:17 PM PDT by Indy Pendance

Are you truly independent? Do you have the skills? Can you hunt, grow a garden, can food, sew-knit, live off the land? Are you ready? Do you possess the "lost" skills? Our family is ready. In obama's words, "bring it on". Once the economy collapses, I'll be here longer than the liberals and their pampered lives.

I meant to mention that Coast flashlights is giving one away for free if you pay the $3.50 shipping.

I did it and got a nice little $10.00, LED flashlight with an 18 hour battery life (AAA battery).

“diesel, EMP immune “

how old is the tractor?

I have a 2006 Kubota diesel, I think the last few years they use electronic fuel management so NOT immune to EMP. I would like to hear some discussion on this.

You raise an excellent point.

I suppose a tractor that has EFI or other engine control MCU may NOT be immune to EMP. And, since the long EPA arm of the nanny state now reaches down to farm equipment, most tractor diesels these days have some sort of MCU I’m sure.

But I know for sure MY tractor does not have any electronics in the fuel system.

If you can turn it over, you can start it. If it wants to start, that is. :-)

Any time you see a neat how-to online (solar cooking, water purification, food dehydrators, etc.) make sure you print it out and file it away. If you merely bookmarked it and the electricity went down or the government takes over the web you’d outta luck.

Grow a garden? I imagine there are some people out there with enough land, enough seed stored, enough southern exposure, etc that they could grow a garden and live off it... until about October...

That's when you learn to dehydrate any excess produce. Tomatoes and acid fruits can be canned in a solar oven.

But they often fail to look past the butchering and ask WHAT they’re going to do with 100 lbs of meat?

Just about every culture has developed ways of preserving meats, from confits to jerky to mincemeat to curing. Good stuff to know, even if you never use it.

True. Smoking techniques (both cold and hot) also work well as a preservation method. But salt sure does help. :-)

has anyone tried foodinsurance.com. Says the food will store 5-7 years at least. It’s an easy way to stock up with no rotating for years.
