What are you doing to prepare?

Posted on 04/02/2010 5:05:17 PM PDT by Indy Pendance

Are you truly independent? Do you have the skills? Can you hunt, grow a garden, can food, sew-knit, live off the land? Are you ready? Do you possess the "lost" skills? Our family is ready. In obama's words, "bring it on". Once the economy collapses, I'll be here longer than the liberals and their pampered lives.

P.S.
Our Costco stores here carry an emergency Food Supply bucket with 200 servings in each. They have a shelf life of 20 years. I think I paid about $70. Also, they have the large buckets of powered milk and the 25 and 50 lb bags of rice and beans. Super cheap food to store!

... I prefer a wooden box with a toilet seat, and you slide the bucket in. You put something on the bottom of the buck - leaves, leaf mould, sawdust from raw wood (NOT kiln dried lumber, the microbes that eat poop are dead), even normal dirt - a layer. Then every time someone uses the bucket, they sprinkle a handful of whatever on the product, and when full, take outside (or if you have room you can build a ... shed outside).

It’s a good idea to have a few buckets, because if each bucket sits for a while it starts composting in the bucket, put the lid on but not tight, leave a crack for air.

A compost bin can be made from any kind of lumber hanging around, pallets if available and chicken wire. About 4 or 5 feet tall. Pile of compost material next to it. Dump bucket into compost pile, shovel some more composting material on it, and walk off.

Great ideas!

There are some brands of sterile tampons, but most are not. There is a product called “Quickclot,” which I’ve heard only good things about. It used to be a powder, and have a risk of burn, but now I understand it’s much more safe to use.

IMHO tampons are a plus to have in any event, because if there are any menstrating females about, it may be a nightmare for them to go into the shock of not having normal means. 150 years ago, women were used to dealing more with their bodily functions. Women are survivors, by nature, but I would want to relieve anything I could for the ones closest to me, at least.

... We're all inbred now. ...

Hey, speak for your self. Me and the person I am married to did not have the same last name BEFORE we were married... (*smile*)

I imagine there are some people out there with enough land, enough seed stored, enough southern exposure, etc that they could grow a garden and live off it... until about October... The ONLY thing most people should think about garden-wise is growing as much as possible to supplement what you have stored.

Yep, water and canned food works better than gardens. Gardens are OK to supplement, but canned food is where it's at...Last for years if stored right too.

Canned food is what feeds armies.

It might come down to being prepared to eat your next door neighbors cat - as long as he’s OK with eating your dog!
Literally.

I think it's one of those items that can come in handy for barter, even if not useful for everyone...

Don’t forget spices. Everyone talks about the rice and beans but no one talks about (Sea)salt, pepper, cumin, cayenne, cinnamon etc. Probably make good barter material as well.

Indy, this is a topic that could mean living or starving for most people. This is something that needs to be put out there for those that are unprepared. I thank God that others have thought of this, as I have.

Ping for your thread Indy!

I grow gardens... getting bigger every year. I have filled my a large portion of my 2 acres with vegetable garden boxes and fruit trees. Starting on a chicken coop now. I "can" and store food, both food I grow, and food I buy. I buy solar panels and batteries. I load ammo, and store a plenty. I have the means to protect what I have. Other items that I depend are stored as well.
I am always looking on ways to be more independent. I am always looking to increase my production of food and power. Hand water well, solar oven, generators, and fuel. I have been prepping for a few years. I will be hooking up my new solar hot water heater shortly. I dont simply want a surplus of food and supplies to hold me over if I need it, I am looking for more ways to sustain myself, even if I dont "need to". Even if there never is a breakdown in society, even if things turn around and we live in a robust economy and get a pro-constitutional pro-liberty government... even if there never is a fear of a "SHTF" scenario, I want to be as independent as I can. I seem to focus on food, defense, and energy... Beans, Bullets and Batteries.

And anti-diarrheal medicine. It’ll probably be worth it’s weight in gold. All the diet changes, the suspect water, flu’s going around, who knows.

Mountain House #10 cans are great.....but they are expensive. Datrex bars are high calorie bars which are cheap and can supplement the expensive freeze dried foods.

No kidding. The word “Salary,” comes from the fact that salt was used as pay.

Spices will probably be worth much more than their weight in gold. They have been mediums of exchange from probably as long as gold. Choking down one more dead squirrel would be mitigated by some pepper!
