Howdy all, I'm a long-time lurker, occasional poster here on FR. I’ve always enjoyed the good articles, lively debate and excellent resources for conservatives here, so I’m taking the liberty of bringing a slight “issue” to y’all to see what you think.
Recently (around the start of summer, about two months ago) my younger sister (aged 22) started talking about a young man she’d met in one of her Communications classes. She said he was very nice, handsome, smart, and it was obvious that she was starting to take an interest in him. About a month ago, they went out on a date, and just now, she changed her Facebook status to reflect that she was “in a relationship” with this gentleman.
I clicked on his profile name, and noticed with more than a little dread and disbelief that his political views were “Very Liberal” and his fan pages were for 0bama, Students for Obama, etc. A lot of his favorite books were by Naomi Klein, Al Franken, Howard Zinn, and the other “intelligentsia” that the Left loves to trot out.
I haven’t met this gentleman yet, but we’re all supposed to have dinner at my parent’s home tomorrow evening. Any ideas on how I should react to this? My parents raised my sister and myself to honor God, country, and family first, and I’m almost a little hurt that she’s bringing home “the enemy.” I’m torn between wanting to correct her thinking like an older brother can vs. just letting it go, but I can’t really bear the thought of my sister turning into an Obamabot herself. She’s of the college age at a generally liberal campus, so I’m worried she’s entering a Leftist phase at the behest of this kid.
So, Freepers- how should I handle this? What would you do?
Thank you for the suggestion, but knowing how they are, I think they would just 1) resent it, and 2) think I’m a wacko. Besides, whenever possible, I prefer to be of service to others “in secret”. I’m trying to learn the difficult trait of humility.
Ahhhh. Learning humility. That I do understand. It’s my own personal Waterloo. But it’s everybody else’s as well so at least I’m not alone. *grin*
Oh yes, we’re all in that one together, my friend. I once read somewhere that a saint said, of all the spiritual traits, humility is the most pleasing to God. I don’t know if true, but since it is so difficult to learn, possibly it is true.
No, no. My Granddaughter. I never had girls. I know why he was kicked out. Divorced parents, mother with bi-polar problems...the usual conflicts. He had his own set of problems which seem to be much better in a stable atmosphere with people who care about him. He’s a hard worker and may go into the service, which would be a good thing. I haven’t given up hope on him by any means. He’s in a continual struggle between God and satan, tugging at him. Not unlike most kids today.

Take him out back and whip his ass - if she really likes real men, seeing him pee his pants and run home to mommy will make her bring home a Marine next time.

In my family we have a pledge to never speak of politics among liberals. We set the record straight at the very beginning. Case closed. Why spoil a nice meal with politics?

Oh yes, the birth certificate thread. I think it is gaining momentum but will never be resolved until long after NObama is out of office, if then. Wish I had more optimism.
Ask him what he thinks about the health care bill. Of course he will say it is wonderful. Then ask him if he has read it. :)
Don't mess with the relationship. Too much of that happens in my family, the girls are always sticking their noses into one-another’s or their friends’ shit and all it brings is ugly drama that accomplishes nothing.
Unless he hurts her big time. In which case you'll have to step in and kill him.
