A Wisconsin man has been ordered to return the roadkill deer head he mounted after eating the animal's remains.
Seriously? Let's start counting the problems here: Man eats another person's roadkill deer, mounts it like he hunted it, and now the state wants the head back because it belongs to them?
Keep it weird, Wisconsin.
The 2nd District Court of Appeals says John Longo, 69, found a dead deer on the road near his home in February 2008. He put the carcass in his truck and ate it at home. He proceeded to mount the deer's head for his home like it was some kind of trophy.
Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources is pissed. They gave him a $208 ticket later that year because it's illegal to remove a deer carcass from the road unless you have a permit.
Then the story got dramatic. Wisconsin officials were fighting to get the deer head back. It's their property, apparently.

Fortunately, we have a good friend and avid hunter who gives us a doe each season in exchange for letting him goose hunt here on our land.
So, since the last doe I bagged on my own dime was back in in 1982, I’m doing pretty good, LOL!

You let me know if you’ll exchange an honest days labor for some hunting privileges. I’d be more than happy to work something out.
Just bring a broom; the Canada Geese fly so low you can practically swat them down some days.
We live between two lakes and they fly to one in the am and back in the pm.
My gun-shy Basset Hound is CONVINCED that the geese are armed; he associates the gunshot with their honking, so when they fly over and honk he heads for the high weeds or under a truck, LOL!
We had a song bird that smashed into a window. The bird specialist was three hours away. When I asked him what he was going to do he said he would euthanize it.
So we kept it and nursed it to health. It flew away a little cockeyed but we saw it all summer.
Stupid laws to turn us all into criminals.
Washington State has already laid claim to the rainwater that falls on private property.
They are being magnanimous for the time being, but state statute says: "State law defines water resources as “all water above, upon, or beneath the surface of the earth, located within the state.” RCW 43.27A.020. (first paragraph, second sentence)

Oh, sure. You deal with it the same you would any animal you’ve harvested.
Don’t I know it ... how can a government say they own the water that falls from the sky???? Only if you capture it do they say they control it .....
Used to call these..redneck road steaks, after they have been cooking on the road all day in 80-100 Degree heat.
If they want the head back he should also mail them samples of the remains of the deer after consumption. Air tight containers of course.

My mom had a deal with the local cops where she lived in Michigan. If the road kill wasn’t *too* squished, they’d call her and she’d haul it off for food. Saved them the money paying someone to collect it.
The guts were usually blown, but she’d get some nice shoulder and neck roasts out of the deal. (Hour-old road kill isn’t bad.) She also cleaned and saved the skulls.
(Yes, I had an unusual childhood. But I still appreciate the value of a good hunk of meat!)

It must be a really nice mount of a really nice rack. Roadkill varies in the amount of damage done to the deer carcas, and often presents an opportunity to get anywhere from 1/4 to a whole deer in good shape for nothing if gathered fresh. I have seen a deer get hit in the head, and there was nothing wrong with the meat on the rest of it—not even bruised.
With the thought in mind that this animal just met its demise, why not eat it?
Or maybe the DNR suspects the deer wasn’t roadkill, but an ‘off season’ trophy discovered well after the fact.
If the head was in good shape, some of the rest of it had to suffer some damage otherwise..
I hit a deer years ago. Broke the pelvis but it was still alive in the ditch. Called a deputy who came out to put it out and give me a permit. Found out as I butchered it that he ‘put it out’ by firing 2 rounds of .40 cal into it’s high shoulder, but hit no vitals. Thing was finally dead By the time I returned with my dressing knife 20 minutes later. Lotta meat ruined by car AND poor shot placement.
Heck, here in S.E. Michigan you're doing the Macomb County road commission a favor if you pick up any dead deer.......in fact, they should pay the indiviual a bounty on any road kill deer brought in.
The only reason I can think of is to have it tested for CWD or Bovine tuberculosis.....

There was a guy in Michigan last year, or the year before, that shot a huge buck with a bow. Turned out the he bought the license the day after he shot it.
The state fined him and the head became state property.
I know for a fact, ( he was from my local area )that he had a signed contract to sell the head to Cabela’s as soon as the mount was finished.
The price??......$250,000.00 !!!
We've have moose move into the area from other states and territories. Why not deer?
