Only in Wisconsin: Man finds roadkill deer, eats it, mounts head [state wants head back]

A Wisconsin man has been ordered to return the roadkill deer head he mounted after eating the animal's remains.

Seriously? Let's start counting the problems here: Man eats another person's roadkill deer, mounts it like he hunted it, and now the state wants the head back because it belongs to them?

Keep it weird, Wisconsin.

The 2nd District Court of Appeals says John Longo, 69, found a dead deer on the road near his home in February 2008. He put the carcass in his truck and ate it at home. He proceeded to mount the deer's head for his home like it was some kind of trophy.

Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources is pissed. They gave him a $208 ticket later that year because it's illegal to remove a deer carcass from the road unless you have a permit.

Then the story got dramatic. Wisconsin officials were fighting to get the deer head back. It's their property, apparently.

The DNR's chief attorney, Mike Lutz, said the agency felt the deer belonged to the state and judge couldn't order the agency to issue a permit.

Longo never responded to the DNR's appeal, the ruling said. The appeals court found he had abandoned the case, and it decided to reverse Torhorst's decision.

The appeals court sent the case back to the circuit court with orders that Longo return the head to the DNR immediately.

If you’d like to be on or off this Upper Midwest/outdoors/rural list please FR mail me. And ping me is you see articles of interest.

I'm sure there's a good reason not to simply fine him, give him the permit since he ate the deer already, and let him keep the head.

The guy found a dead deer on the road and mounted its head in his home? This guy is one of the biggest losers I’ve ever heard of.

My question is....”HOW tha heck did the State find out”? One of his loose-lip drinking buddies jealous because HIS road-kill sandwich wasn’t as big? Good grief. This sure makes me understand my DIL a bit better. :)

Forget the mount, I can only assume it was worthwhile, the "permit" is simply a matter of calling the sheriff and having him come out and give you one. Personally I'm not big on roadkill, but even if he hit it, waste 15 minutes and get the permit.

And this is at the appellate level. Maybe it'll end up in Federal Court and Judge Sotomeyer (sp?) can deal with the case.

People are nuts, the government is nuts. Which makes sense, I suppose.

Good question. I don't know what the article means by "head", but if it's nice rack One of his loose-lip drinking buddies jealous probably fits.

One of the first rules in road kill is not to go around talking about it.

Pretty soon the state will say all rain water is theirs and anyone capturing it in barrels will have to pay a fee ....

Coming back from the airport one night, I hit a glancing blow on a doe crossing the road. I stopped, and found that she was still alive, but with a broken leg. I drove a couple of miles down the road to a friend’s house. We got his pistol and returned to the scene to put the doe out of her misery.

Not wanting to see good meat go to waste, we dragged her to the road, loaded her in my Tahoe and drove back to my friends house. He dressed her and we had a great meal of veal stroganoff. Both of our freezers were loaded and the local gamewarden got some nice steaks.

Still an expensive meal, given the deductible on my comprehensive insurance.

A couple of times I’ve seen decapitated deer on the side of the road. Some loser cut off a good rack and left the carcass. Apparently, that’s not a big deal.

Not really - I live in Washington. Just thought that after the state wanted the deer head (thought they’d go after any leftover venison) they’d go after something like rain water. Colorado did ... said the rain belonged to them so if you capture it in a cistern you have to pay up ....
