Only in Wisconsin: Man finds roadkill deer, eats it, mounts head [state wants head back]

A Wisconsin man has been ordered to return the roadkill deer head he mounted after eating the animal's remains.

Seriously? Let's start counting the problems here: Man eats another person's roadkill deer, mounts it like he hunted it, and now the state wants the head back because it belongs to them?

Keep it weird, Wisconsin.

The 2nd District Court of Appeals says John Longo, 69, found a dead deer on the road near his home in February 2008. He put the carcass in his truck and ate it at home. He proceeded to mount the deer's head for his home like it was some kind of trophy.

Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources is pissed. They gave him a $208 ticket later that year because it's illegal to remove a deer carcass from the road unless you have a permit.

Then the story got dramatic. Wisconsin officials were fighting to get the deer head back. It's their property, apparently.

This whole thing is strange.

On my way to work during the winter I often see several deer that have been hit by cars. The only time I stop is if the deer possesses a hazard for oncoming traffic. I usually pull it off the road into the ditch.

Eating it after its been hit by a car? I'm not at that point yet.

On the other hand, the state certainly has more things to worry about than getting back that head. Good grief!

If they get back the head they sure as hell better reimburse him for the cost.

Can you say Bermuda. They have no natural springs of water on the rock and you buy water like you would buy oil to heat you house.

You saw this as well?

Absolutely bizarre. I see plenty of road kill carcasses to and from work, but most are pretty mangled.

Okay gang, I'm not a hunter. If the picture is a true picture of the road kill, why would you mount it? There are no antlers? Isn't that the reason to put up a trophy?

That’s the picture from the article, but I assume it’s generic.

What the citizens should do, is sue the State for “their” deer that people hit and cause damage to their cars. If it “their” deer, then they can pay for the damage the deer do.

This whole thing is strange.

I'll say!

I live in backwoods E. Texas and I haven't heard of anyone eating roadkill in 40 years. (Them was po'folk)

This dude had the head mounted and taxidermy isn't cheap! So he can't claim the "po' folk" defense. The State of Wisconsin needs to change their drawers.... they're in a twist over nothing.

It was on FR ... just commented on it ... figured that the state was so anal to want the head ... what were they intending on doing with it?

“It’s their property, apparently.”

Actually, that deer belongs to EVERY Taxpayer in this state. But as for my fair share, I’ll just take the Tenderloin, and he can keep the head, LOL!

This state gets werider each day. Do you think the DNR guys and everyone in the Capitol has a Morning Meeting to see how they can wring a few more bucks out of each and every ONE of us?

I do.

Jerks.

“Pretty soon the state will say all rain water is theirs and anyone capturing it in barrels will have to pay a fee...”

Awe Jeeze, Edith, you Dingbat! You know the Feds troll here (on our time and our dime!) looking for outlandish new ideas for taxing us even further in our sarcastic comments!! ;)

Around here people report a carcas lying about and the state has to sen out a truck with a back hoe and they bury it where they find it. I would think the state should be grateful they didnt have to go to the expense of removing the carcass.

Colorado did ... said the rain belonged to them so if you capture it in a cistern you have to pay up ....

They changed their mind on that just a week ago.

So do I. Have you seen the price of an Out-Of-State Deer Tag lately?

Man found a deer and clean it up. What he does with it is his business. The fact that he would need a permit is bogus. We are becomeing lemmings with needs for permission for everything.

Do you know I cannot nurse a wild sick bird to health in this state with out a permit?

or pick up a bluejay feather for bluejays are protected as songbirds??

My buddy and I hit and killed a deer one night on a dark road in the Colorado Rockies. We pulled over and got out to assess the situation. No sooner than we exited the vehicle, we saw headlights pull up behind us. A man got out of his truck, "Did you guys just hit that deer?" Yep. "Is it dead?" Yep. "Do you want it?" Nope "Can I take it?" Sure. Help yourself.

Apparently some people don't want good venison to go to waste.

Good. You have confirmed for me that the reason to mount a kill is to display a rack (sp?) The amount of information I don't know about hunting sports would fill a lot of books. Thank you for filling me in.

I know a lot about it's hotter than the hot place outside when a person needs to work there. I don't know yet if the chiggers were biting yet!

Can’t you just hear him when he “told his tale” at visitors to his home who saw the mounted head on his wall....”well, there I was...high in my stand right after sunrise...and all a sudden here comes this buck out of the cutover...and I got a bead on him with my .270 and....”

Doesn’t government have anything better to do than to waste money pursuing ridiculous stuff like this?

If it’s a clean kill and doesn’t take a beating, it’s totally worth taking it home for the freezer. I nailed one in the head with my car, very clean kill I raced to a nearby house to report it, and raced back (before days of cellphones). Someone had just picked it up and were leaving with it. Made me mad because I was going to take to my sister’s who could have used the food for her family.

Our brother has brought home two clean fresh kills. One from a car he witnessed hitting the deer, one from the deer his wife had clobbered with her car.

Yep, same with squirrels. Momma squirrel abandons babies, I take them in, and find out it’s illegal to do so when I took them to a wildlife habitat. How stupid is that?
