Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

The man that bought our horses in Ramona, allowed us on his ranch, to see the gathering spot for the Indian women, where they did their grinding. In a grove of huge trees, there were several large almost flat granite boulders, just the right height to sit on, and they were full of grinding holes. I didn’t count them, but could see that there might well be 50 to a 100 holes, several boulders.

I used to live in a town called Lakeside, not too far from Ramona. As a child we would play on boulders that had the same grinding holes in them ,as you described.

They were neat!

5. We are Freepers, so why did we fail at not recognizing what was happening on 9/15/08 until long after the occurrence? Isn’t there some way we could have known about it so we could decide whether to panic or not?<<<

We tried to warn folks and they were not ready to listen, that is why there are 10,000 posts in the first thread, the link is on page one of this thread.

How long?

Until you loose your job, would be my guess.

Store safe food now, keep it simple and rotate it.

There isn’t a lot one can do, except stop spending and store money and the needed things for survival.

Take a look at your monthly bills, disconnect the cable tv, get a radio, have only a basic phone, not all the frills that cost more each month than the phone service.

Browse through these threads, back about 3 or 400 posts are several on what to do with the kids that does not cost money.

Can you plant a garden?

Will you still have a house to live in or car, if you loose your job?

For the things you might need, even clothes for the kids, join Free Cycle group for your area, they are at Yahoo Groups.

You donate something and then you can ask for what you want and in my area, we are a fairly low income group, so I am amazed at what I see asked for and then see a post thanking someone for giving it to them.

I smile, thinking of the free for all, when my sister has to settle my estate, for I want much of it to go to the local folks.

If I were you and did not have secure housing, I would join the Free Cycle group and ask about a free travel trailer.

So what if some of you have to sleep on the floor, it beats sleeping in the car.

When we came to California during the great depression to pick fruit, it was in a car and there we lived, 3 kids and 2 adults.

When we came back the second time, my dad had attached a plywood box to a car axle and we had a very rough travel trailer, very crude, rough benches for pallets and a shelf for the kerosene stove, sure did beat the car.

Instead of asking when, it would be better to assume that it is going to hit before you are ready, and start getting ready.

Have a garage sale, raise some money, get over keeping up with the jones and only buy the important stuff, make do, reuse and remake.

When I get in a box and nothing is clear, I sit down with a stack of paper, and I write down everything I can think of, you will wind up with 20 to 50 sheets of lists, for quickly, you discover that that should go on a ‘sales’ list, and that on a buy list and so it goes, do it when alone and bright minded.

Put it all down, it is for you and no one else.

You will be amazed at the thoughts you have, soon you will have pro and con lists and so they grow, until you reach the final summary and it will show what to do.

Sorry I couldn’t give you a date.

My hazy crystal ball - Hmmmmm Sure looks like the end of this quarter is going to be a breaking point. I am preparing for that deadline! Hoping to help some fellow FReepers along too. (As well as our family - Including extended members.)<<<

End of the quarter will be close, as from that point, we will see high school and college students out and wanting a job, the same one you want.

Steve0, I hit send, before I also said welcome to the thread.

I’m 100% fine with a pseudo recovery, even if it means Obama gets the credit. You can bet I’ll be saving every penny possible, paying off debt, and storing food and supplies. I won’t be fooled into thinking it will last forever.

And here I made a Chocolate Cherry cake with a fudge icing.

Is that the recipe with a chocolate cake mix, a can of cherry filling and some almond extract? That recipe is one of my family's favorites.

and finally, the reality that beyond Mexico’s southern border lies greater danger and Islamic terrorist training camps. [snip]<<<

From your link, yes, it is heating up.

According to the Gallagher radio program, and he is in Texas, the Texas National Guard is on alert for instant call out, to go to the border, they expect Mexico to explode into Texas.

As for the terrorist camps, do a search for mosques in mexico and you will find it is a growing fast religion there, both muslims and mexicans that are converting.

Try a search for communist groups in mexico and see what the real danger to us is.

I really need to read these, as it has been a year, since my last google on them:

For some reason, mexican muslims go to Florida:

It reminds me of the PaperbackSwap, SwapCD and SwapDVD sites. At first I thought it was a labor barter site.

I will check it out a little more later on.

Actually, it is not limited to their area.. I have been to places that I was given a warning to avoid certain food establishments as I was an obvious outsider and outsiders are treated like this article...<<<

This is not the first arrest for it and it is in their training manual.

And I suspect that it is what was in our tomatoes and spinach and lots of the hamburger meat.

Hamas likes to use suicide bombers who have a disease in Israel, or they soak the nails in the bombs in diseased blood.

We are not evil enough to keep up with them.

Maybe you and I can look around corners and see what is possible.

They’re all Craftsmen tools...table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, *sniff* my band saw, um...I know there’s more...ya don’t REALLY want me to crawl thru the mess in the garage, now, do you? :)<<<

Looks interesting, lets see what some that are connected to California can do with them.

The tools are in Orange county, Calif.

I know my husband liked his Craftsmen tools.

Yes, I know Lakeside well, LOL, or did, I left San Diego in 1969.

Those rocks are interesting, to me, for the simple reason that they had them every place on their travels.

We talk about which mill to buy and they simple asked for the grinding stone.

Welcome to the thread.
