Glenn Beck health problem?

Posted on 01/04/2008 10:26:04 AM PST by redlocks322

Does anyone know what happened to Glenn? I saw some of his you tube video and he looks horrible. Just guessing but from the little big I heard it sounded like the hospital gave him the wrong medicine or something after surgery...

Glenn has made no secret about back problems he has had.

Oh yea forgot about that. Last summer my Dad had to go in for surgery for his back pain. He fought it for a long time, but one day he just couldn't walk anymore because of it. I had to go pick him up from work and take him home cause Mom was out of the State visiting her parents.

Doctors said well we can operate or we can drug you up for the rest of your life. Dad of course opted for surgery.

He was in bed pretty much for a month after that and pretty wobbly for another 2 months.

Now he seems just fine and even goes to the gym twice a week to work out.

Thanks. I found this on some ambulance chasers website, but still it is astonishing.

“A doctor tried this patch with me after breaking my back in a car accident.”

That doctor has some nerve, first wrecking your car and then trying to shut you up with high-octane drugs. :)

Apparently it was Neurontin - also known as fentanol (not “fentanyl”, which is a different drug). Some quick on-line research turned up a number of reports of suicidal thoughts and behavior associated with it.

I dunno since I have no speakers here, but it seems that something really bad happened, he’s bleeding from bad places, he hates the health care profession (understandably apparently) and thinks we’re all screwed economically.

Other than that I dunno.

“Interesting. I wonder if there are some bad batches of this patch out on the market, because sometimes Mom would tolerate it fine and then after I came back home for the holidays, she started having problems.”

I was on the fentanyl patches for six months. Where they were put on and what the temperature was had a major effect on how much of the drug was delivered to my system.

I went into awful depressions when the drug did not get into my system, and got “high” when I got too much.

They are VERY unpredictable in my opinion.

“Apparently it was Neurontin - also known as fentanol (not “fentanyl”, which is a different drug).”

Neurontin is brand name gabapentin.

It is a neurotransmitter which can be taken orally for neuropathy.

Typically used for diabetes induced nerve damage, and also used to suppress seizures in epileptics.

It is NOT a pain medicine per se.

One thing that Gabapentin doesn’t do is get you high... There is no way it was Gabapentin that he was on, unless it was in combination with other drugs. He was talking about being on heavy-duty pain killers, and Gabapentin as you correctly pointed out isn’t used for quick pain relief... It’s a longer acting drug that you have to be weaned onto and off of. He was probably on Morphine in the hospital...

My doc said it was for seizures but that it "had been found to help" pain patients. What a crock. Why not just use prescription painkillers that were MADE FOR PAIN?!?!?!

Not yelling at you dude, just at doctors who'd rather use patients in pain as guinea pigs then simply give them proven medicines for their pain.

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I hope you are on the mend now.
Mom was apparently almost comotose yesterday, but is much better today. She has been running fever from her radiation & chemo and also was sleeping under an electric blanket, so I am sure this is what happened from what I am reading.

I should hear from the doc today and will be putting my foot down on the patch. Thanks all for starting this thread, it has helped more than you will ever know.

Prayers up for Glenn Beck!

"She has been running fever from her radiation & chemo and also was sleeping under an electric blanket, so I am sure this is what happened from what I am reading."

It almost certainly is. In fact, if the doctor did not warn you about this very thing, he was negligent IMHO. The amount of drug absorbed through the skin varies a LOT based on body temperature.

There are other things that can be done:

Oral oxycodone or Oxycontin if she tolerates it.

Oral MSContin.

Implantable epidural morphine pump.

Be aggressive with the Docs and make sure your Mom is kept as comfortable as possible. Call in an outside pain management specialist if you can't get the main Dr. to do the right thing.

May God Bless You and Your's

To shaft29; At first I thought you were making a bad joke but with your next post I have to agree with RainMan and ask you also: How long have you been an idiot?

I like Glenn, but he is a bit of a drama king.

I get that sense as well.

You suggestions are appreciated. I am heading back over there tomorrow(she lives a couple of states over) to stay on top of things. I was there for three months and just came home for the holidays thinking my siblings could handle it, but they aren’t a Nurse Ratchet like I can be....LOL

Grateful for your prayers,

Penelope
