OK. A little while ago we adopted a beautiful male cat from the animal shelter. We dutifully had him neutered, got him the required shots and began to care for him. About a week or so ago, the cat is leaving some serious odor from his "marking" (spraying). My wife, is having a major problem with this and says the cat has got to go.
We are moving into a new home in a few weeks and she does not want to have to clean after this cat. I know my kids will be heart broken over this, but she is resolute. Perhaps adoption by another party? She thinks we can return it to the shelter. I wasn't so sure about this, so I am asking other cat owners for advice.

Most cats bond with a location, not a person. If you move him you may lose him anyway. We’ve had a few disappear after a move.

Reading the other comments, I now know why some animals eat their young. Go with the person that uses his knowledge and says to get the glands removed. Adoption is a life long commitment.

Most animal shelters put a clause in the adoption papers that specifies that should you need to give up the cat that the shelter will take it back.

If you neuter the cat, it shouldn’t spray. Of course, that won’t mean that it doesn’t stink.

Understand her point.
Try "Farnam Feliway Comfort Zone Feline Behavior Modification Spray" before you move. It is suppose to de-stress the cat and make it not spray.

Go to the above link and do a search, or post a question. I am almost certain there are several posts that adress your problem.

I personally don’t like cats, but then again, I probably have not been cooking them correctly.

If a male cat is neutered after the age of six months, it has a higher likelihood of spraying. If the cat is over a year, it will more than likely continue to mark its territory even though he is fixed. If you previously had a cat, the cat may also be 'rebranding' the territory as his.
They have consistent targets for marking, so try putting up tinfoil- they hate it as the marking will splash back on them. There's also the possibility the cat may be under stress and is marking as a result. Call your vet and tell them what's happening.
Unfortunately, cats who urinate/spray and are turned over to a shelter are usually put down because no one wants a cat who sprays/urinates on carpet. One more reason to get your cats fixed before they are six months old. For boy kitties, if the 'little boys' are showing, they can be removed. I highly recommend doing it as soon as the vet says so.

The vet says that neutered cats can “spray”. It won’t smell as bad as a non-neutered cat, but it can do it. It still smells pretty bad.

Sometimes a cat will do this if it has developed a kidney problem...usually from what it is eating. Are you feeding him Chinese food?
