How old was the cat when it was neutered? Ours got the snip & clip right at 6 months and we have’nt had a problem with them spraying. This might be something that had gotten to be a habit for this cat prior to his Kerry/Edwards surgery.

Of course, like another poster commented, the claws are a real problem with my cats. Especially on the leather sofa...

Now that I think of it, it may have been a bladder problem. One or the other, but it did clear up right away without surgery, not that I am against surgery if that’s what it takes.

We had a similar problem... we have a few cats and one just likes to pee where he shouldn't. We sealed off the the area with one of those baby barriers that you put where you would not want a small child to crawl. If you arrange them in such a way that the cat has to go to the litter box, you should be fine.

Oh, and on a personal note, I would get rid of my significant other before I would ever part with my animals.

Well I got a new kitty cat
My wife won’t let that kitty out
I bought a brand new litter box
But it’s stinkin’ up the house
I tried the sand and gravel stuff
I tried deodorizin’ pills
But I gotta take the litter out
‘Cuz the smell is with us still

My wife, she don’t like it
Clean the cat box
Clean the cat box
I really don’t like it
Clean the cat box
Clean the cat box

At the store they got a potion
Oh, it really kills the smell
The cashier says it’s cool
He uses it himself
But since the wind changed direction
And my guests began to cry
The crowd got a whiff
Of that crazy cat box
WOW!!!!

I really don’t like it
Clean the cat box
Clean the cat box
I really don’t like it
But I’m supposed to go bowlin’!
Clean the cat box
Clean the cat box
My wife she don’t like it
The guys are outside waitin’!
Clean the cat box
Clean the cat box
I really don’t like it
You know I really hate this!
Clean the cat box
Clean the cat box

I’m sure you can return the cat to the shelter, but there’s a good chance it will get put to sleep there.

Two steps I think you try (simultaneously, since it sounds like you don’t have much time) before doing anything that drastic:

1) Buy some Feliway spray. If you r local pet store doesn’t have it, you can order it online, or your vet probably sells it too. It’s a pheromone that has a calming effect on cats, and often helps reduce or prevent marking behavior.

1) Check with a vet about psychoactive medications. I once had a cat with a MAJOR peeing in around the house problem (did it for attention — peed on the cable box on top of TV when people were watching TV, peed on the sugar bowl on the kitchen table when people were in the kitchen, peed on the coffee maker on the kitchen counter when coffee was being made, and would leave a big puddle outside bedroom doors that were shut to keep the pee-monster out). Just one little amitriptyline pill daily put a stop to this. Poor little fella was just feeling anxious about life in general, and peeing was the symptom. Also, if at all possible in the neighborhood you’re moving to, install a cat door, and let the kitty come and go freely.

With collar, with rabies tag and ID/phone number tag!

I wasn't so sure about this, so I am asking other cat owners for advice.

Get rid of your wife and the problem should be solved...

That may reduce the odor somewhat, but will not stop the marking, which is behavioral.

I don’t know, but it shouldn’t be outrageous, its effectively surgicalremoval of two sacs/glands near the anus. I’d guess probably a little pricier than a neutering since its not as common, but not horribly so. But you’d have to call a few vets in your area and ask.

peed on the coffee maker on the kitchen counter when coffee was being made,

That is treading dangerously close to death penalty territory.

"This is curable. Check with your vet."

Besides a proper diet, they need fresh water also. Change it everyday, and wash the water bowl. Poor cat has a bladder infection. It may require antibiotics to get it cleared up.

My thoughts exactly.
The cat os part of the family. I would bet the kids would vote to ditch mom before they ditch kitten!

Why look! The same manly men who roam FR, proclaiming their manliness, are the same who come over and post on some poor guys cat thread. Clods, manly clods, but clod nonetheless.

Without the anal sacs/glands there is nothing they can mark. They’ll still stick their tail in the air and try.. but nothing will come out.

If its pissing on things that’s an entirely different issue.

You’ve listed the best reasons to keep the cat and get rid of the wife.
