"... perhaps I need to consider relocation."

No, you just have to reconsider your location. (You'll need to familiarize yourself with the candidates -- find out their attitudes about jaywalking ordinances, and such.)

You're a citizen now. Write the incumbents letters. Explain your priorities. Ask for their positions.

Dont forget your letters to the editors. Become a somebody, a character, an institution! You go, girl!

It's okay, 'Face! The Shark has it up on his popular blog, Sound Politics, and I was listening to him on the area's conservative talk radio program when I left work.

The lyin' leftie local media aren't going to carry it anyway, so he's done the best he can. This *is* getting out.

I've been reading the papers and watching the local news on the alphabet channels, and from what I can see, it's a democratic stronghold. The dems thought they could get some money if they began to ticket jaywalkers, and they went full bore.

They are so sure of their positions that it was after I had gone to court and learned that it had been dismissed that they sent me the letter of dismissal...dated October 16, which was a Sunday, and which I received on Friday, October 21...the day AFTER my court date of October 20.

I can't get any satisfaction here without a heart attack or stroke...mine...I'm not into that, thank you very much. If I am going to spend time and effort on being a thorn, I want to make sure that thorn is long, hard and indestructible.

If I start a fight, I want to make sure I can finish it.

I think the "Dread" part refers more to your demonstrated intellectual capacity. With a JD under your belt and your ongoing pursuit of things numeric and taxing, anyone venturing to lock horns with you in a debate had better come prepared to lie in the dust awhile. A little "dread" in advance may well spare them considerable embarrassment.

Years ago I would have laughed at that. No more.

It's been a decade or more since the local paper last called to verify my authorship of letters to the editor. I e-mail the letter in, and usually within a couple of weeks it appears in the paper.

And more legislators know who I am than I do they. (Of course, they usually know me as the faceless author of letters about legislation that the goodwife delivers personally and lobbies on -- it was interesting to make the rounds in Olympia early this year: when I was introduced there was most always this "Oh, so YOU'RE..." reaction.)

Write them letters. Short and to the point (*never* ramble, never rant).

And thank them for their response (if you possibly can) -- they get too few thanks, ever, from constituents. Those who do thank them will get remembered. And more attention in the future.

I have made a difference in the laws governing this state. Certainly not as much as I would like, but things are better than if I had done nothing at all.

I have to be ever mindful of CFIDS and how it controls my life, or I would be much more active in all things than I am.

You start by going after the little fish, the 00s then you go after the 000 then you go for the grandaddy of them all, the 0000s. When you have two in a row of those you will truly be a man my son.

Good on ya!

I haven't written a legislator in awhile, but I lobbied locally against a proposed daytime curfew ordinance and helped get it shot down. Got a letter published in the paper with fresh-off-the-press research results in a study of the effects of daytime curfew ordinances. After that, support trailed away into the ether and the proposal was abandoned. The Mayor and the Chief of Police weren't all that happy, but they accepted the researchresults as proof that the venture wouldn't have achieved their stated goals anyway, and they moved on.

Much of my present-day lobbying is in the realm of ideas out in the forums. As much as I can do between various work activities, anyway.

Link here and track up for the progression of debate.

I am about due for a letter to my Legislators, though. I'll have to dig around and see what mischief they've been up to this month.

In democratic strongholds (such as Seattle and WA), "satisfaction" is hard to come by. The triggers to our involvement might never be resolved; we can't address them directly and I sometimes doubt we will ever achieve "satisfaction."

But rather than providing a single long, hard and indestructible thorn, the goodwife and I appear as multiple small, sufficiently tough and definitely persistent thorns. We don't win all the battles (I really wish we could...) but we run up pretty good scores on most, puncturing lots of overinflated tyres along the way.

They know who we are. The last time the goodwife showed up to testify on some bill or another, she heard one of "them" whisper to another: "OMG, it's her!"

Heh. Yup. It is she.

I understand (as best I can)! You have to temper your involvement with your ability to sustain it.

That's my problem of late -- the time the legislature goes into session here approximates one of the heaviest work periods with one of my committees, and that includes travel, subsidiary meetings and other time-wasters.
