Welcome back. Where ya been?

I had to take a powder to see David McCullough speak about his new book "1776"--one of the nice things about being in NYC near a Barnes & Noble. So we've attended a few: Karen Hughes, Joe Scarborough (his mother's a FReeper), Max Frankel, Nancy Soderberg--just to name drop four in the last half year. Oh, I feel so cultured.

"Oh, I feel so cultured."

Reminds me, I gotta lay in a supply of yogurt.

"Where ya been?"

Moi? I hang around. I've been doing a lot of every-other-weekend traveling. Then I have to double up on chores when I'm not traveling, and the compound takes a lot of maintenance.

Other'n that, I've been here. You need a poem? Let's see...

There once was a man from Tashkent,
Who swore, "I'll become President!"
He was crushed, you will note,
Though he might get to vote,
But he wasn't a U.S resident!
How's that?

"Is that Wrigleys as in chewing gum?"

You said a mouthful, Snugs!

The first park on Chicago’s North Side, Wrigley Field cost $250,000 when it was built in 1914. Charlie Weeghman built the park to house his baseball team, the Chicago Federals (a.k.a. the Chi-Feds and, later, as the Whales) of the brand-new Federal League, which was challenging the established major leagues. The Federal League folded after only two years, so Weeghman, leading a ten man syndicate which included chewing gum magnate Willam Wrigley, Jr., purchased the Cubs of the National League. The team was moved from West Side Grounds to what was then known as Weeghman Park. In 1918, Wrigley took over Weeghman's share of the team and by 1919 had bought out the shares of the other members of the syndicate. The name of the stadium was changed to Cubs Park in time for opening day, 1920. It was renamed Wrigley Field in his honor in 1926.
Nice ta meet'cha!

That's pretty good for being hatched on the fly.

I thought I might try to match you, but could only get a clean first line:

Then I gave up and went to bed since my muse had already preceded me.

There once was a man from Almaty,
Who rushed to get to the jonnity.
He was losing his mind,
For his robes were entwined,
And he said, "Çàïðàøèâàåìàÿ Âàìè - ñòðàíèöà â íàñòîÿùåå âðåìÿ íåäîñòóïíà."

"Çàïðàøèâàåìàÿ Âàìè - ñòðàíèöà â íàñòîÿùåå âðåìÿ íåäîñòóïíà."?

That's outrageous. I can hardly believe he said that. I give him credit for his rhyming ability, but we must keep in mind that this is a family website and young kids may be viewing these limericks. The Net Nanny will definitely not be pleased, IMHO.

Good morning. Today is Wednesday, May 25, 2005, BOJANGLES DAY!

Sammy Davis, Jr. and Shirley Temple’s tap-dancing coach, Luther ‘Bill’ Robinson, was born in 1878 on this day in Richmond, Virginia. By 1935, he was dancing up a storm with the curly-haired child-star in such movies as The Little Colonel and The Littlest Rebel. These two, along with Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and Just Around the Corner in 1938, catapulted Mr. Robinson to fame ... international fame.

Robinson spent most of his childhood dancing in vaudeville. In 1928 he debuted on Broadway in Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds of 1928 and danced in Ain’t Misbehavin’ in 1929. 1932 was a year of firsts for the tap-dancing Robinson. First, his tap dancing was recorded on Doin’ the New Low Down, with Don Redman, the first time anyone’s dancing was recorded. Then he starred in the first all-black talkie film, Harlems Heaven.

Bill Robinson, more recognized by his nickname, Mr. Bojangles, than by his birth name, and known to many as the Mayor of Harlem, was personified in music. First Duke Ellington recorded Bojangles, a musical portrait of the man, in 1940. Then The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded Mr. Bojangles, a top-ten hit record in 1971.

Fame, however, didn’t bring him fortune. Robinson died penniless in 1949.

According to this site

http://212.58.224.125/dna/ww2/A1326269

Wrigley's Baseball Field WAS named after the gum. (Scroll down to "SEVERAL A/K/A RANDOM's 'sporting blues'", then about to the 5th paragraph.)

Down The Road

I’m setting up some real estate,
For a special breed of folks,
The kind who think the rest are all,
Somewhat pathetic jokes.

The sort of person who,
Just wants to be left alone.
And who can get on fine if he,
Is stuck out on his own.

I’m talking about curmudgeons,
A classless sort of class.
The ones who, when you try to help,
Tell you to ... take a pass.

They aren’t the devilish kind of folks,
Nor angels, you can tell,
They don’t get on with people types,
But they don’t belong in Hell.

So I’m setting up a place nearby,
The climate’s not so good.
But the understanding is,
It’s for the misunderstood.

They’ll have their books, and poetry,
And other things they like,
And prominently stated in the yard,
The sentiment, “Take a Hike!”

They like to be alone, you see,
And they’re content with that,
So if you have a nominee,
Then you can pass the hat.

We’ll solve a problem in this way,
And another thing that’s swell,
Is if some lost souls ventured by,
They’d be told ... directions well.
