Here’s one I wrote back in ‘76 when the
Great Society was at it’s pee-knuckle:

In the cold and gray Chicago morn,
another well-fare recipient’s born.

In the ghetto.

He grows up learning to fight and cuss,
learns how to rip off all of us.

And get well-fare.

An angry young man with a gun in his hand,
he robs and riots whenever he can.

Sezs he’s hungry.

But his diet is strictly low calorie:
tape decks and color TVs.

And CB radios.

Sezs he sells ‘em to get what he needs,
a jug of wine and a sack of weeds.

And some heroine.

In the cold and gray Chicago morn,
another well-fare recipient’s born.

And the tax-payers cry.

And another one from the ‘70s:

Big long Cadillac,
nice clothes on my back.
That’s what well-fare bought for me.

A 235 loan,
pays for my new home,
and it’s all durn near free.

You work and I get paid,
man I really got it made.
I love the great Society.

Wholeness Of Life

Read: Mark 2:1-12

Son, your sins are forgiven you. . . . Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house. —Mark 2:5,11

Bible In One Year: Isaiah 43-44; 1 Thessalonians 2

A social worker told her colleagues about a young boy in an urban ghetto who appeared to be little more than a bit of twisted human flesh. He had been struck by a car several months before and had not received proper medical attention.

Although not part of her caseload, the social worker took the boy to an orthopedist, who performed surgery on his legs. Two years later the boy walked into her office without crutches. His recovery was complete. The two embraced. "If I accomplish nothing else in my life," said the social worker to herself, "I have made a real difference with at least this one!"

She paused, then said to her colleagues, "This was all several years ago now. Where do you think that boy is today?" Some suggested that he might be a school teacher, others a physician or a social worker. With deep emotion, the woman responded, "No, he's in the penitentiary for one of the foulest crimes a human can commit. I was instrumental in teaching him how to walk again, but there was no one to teach him where to walk."

We must point people to Jesus. Through Him, those with broken bodies, broken dreams, broken homes, and broken hearts receive wholeness of life. —Haddon Robinson

Lord, help us to tell of Your love for mankind—
A love for the sin-sick, the broken, the blind;
And help them to see by the way that we live
A wholeness of being that You long to give. —D. De Haan

A person may go wrong in many different directions but right in only one.

Active Worship

Read: Psalm 100

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. —Psalm 100:4

Bible In One Year: Isaiah 50-52; 1 Thessalonians 5

In his book Folk Psalms of Faith, Pastor Ray Stedman says he wishes that all churchgoers could stand in the pulpit on a Sunday morning and watch the faces in the congregation during the sermon.

Although most people seem to give the minister their attention, many have their minds elsewhere. Stedman writes, "It would be fascinating at the end of a service to know where everybody had been!"

To receive the greatest benefit from a church service, we must prepare our hearts and become active participants. We must become wholeheartedly involved in singing the hymns, silently praying as the pastor leads the congregation in prayer, and worshiping from the heart as the choir sings.

Finally, we need to discipline ourselves to listen intently with a receptive heart to the teaching of God's Word. We must develop a hunger for truth that quiets our spirits, inspires worship, evokes praise to God, and moves us to serve Him.

It's easy to blame the pastor if we leave the service feeling empty and discouraged. But he's just one participant; we must do our part. Those who get the most out of worship are those who put the most into it. —Richard De Haan

The house of God should be a place
For praise and reverent prayer,
Where holy thoughts our spirits fill
Each time we enter there. —Bosch

The heart of worship is worship from the heart.

Mayor, you might like this one to the tune of Marty Robbins’ Saddle Tramp. I only have one verse so far.

The Lord is my Shepard and I shall not want,
He maketh me to lie down,
In green pastures of plenty, I won’t be afraid,
His grace and His mercy abound.

Je-sus Christ……Jesus Christ,
He’s savoir to me,
And he set me free.
Je-sus Christ……Jesus Christ.

I had posted another poem before, guess it wasn't seen.... Whatever. I
wrote this one while listening to Tori Amos. I was looking at 2 different titles.

Cruel Girl

Hair in a swirl,
cruel girl.
Break their hearts a plenty.
Cause them pain,
make them wait in the rain
for a girl who'll never show.
And they know 'yes' may be 'no',
but it's not a safe guess to think 'no' may be 'yes'.
Twisted pearl,
cruel girl.
You may be the life of the party, honey,
but you're empty 'cause you just want their money.
There's so many & you know you could have any,
but what you can get to isn't good enough.
In your eyes, if they give it easy then it's just fluff/
Diamonds, sapphires & unrequited love.
They give all this to you, the mourning dove.
What a world for the cruel girl.
You have no shame when you play your game,
you've even given every step a name.
Life's in a whirl,
cruel girl.
Cause them pain,
...in the rain.
You don't show & they'll never know how they're all the same,
part of your game, where every step has a name...
Hair in a swirl,
twisted pearl,
in a whirl,
the cruel girl...

Very good. Thank you.

I think you posted a poem when I was having lots of computer problems. There were several posts that I didn't get to for 2 or 3 days.

Please continue to post your poems. We like them

Have a great Sunday.

My power was off all morning. First rain of the season so I'm sure enough dust collected on the transformers to cause major problems for the electric company.

I will try to get the Welcome Graphic posted. The think the power will stay on unless we get a heavy rain.

Have a great day, everyone.

Price to Pay

We have a journey coming. The path is marked for you.
You’ve all received instructions in the things you have to do.
Don’t worry about the payment. Your fare’s been paid in full.
It took a little influence, but we know Someone with pull.

You may have had a chance sometime, to give some kids a ride.
I’m sure it made you feel real good, somewhere deep inside.
How generous could you have been to pay the price in pain?
Could you have had the courage to go back again and again?

A million times? A billion? Ten billion ... even more?
We can’t conceive the suffering, or the purpose it was for.
The passage has been paid for us, but something’s still not fair.
You still owe a debt of gratitude that can’t be paid by prayer.

You can pay this debt to others who may need something from you,
Pay it forward, if you will, when you see that it’s come due.
The ones who need are needy. Some even carry signs.
Be careful though to choose your path, there are so many lines.

Do not fall prey to giving, just for the giving’s sake.
The proper way to lend your help will give your back an ache.
And blisters could show up on those oh-so-soft hands you have,
Be comforted that where you’re bound, there will be healing salve.
