The Guild 8-11-04 What Would Ben Franklin Think of John Kerry?
The Quotable Franklin ^ | 8-11-04 | pubmom

According to Benjamin Franklin himself, many of the proverbs and aphorisms found in "Poor Richard's Almanack" were gleaned from the "wisdom of the ages and nations." In the dictums and maxims that follow, one hears echoes of the Bible, the ancients, and collections of proverbs readily available in Franklin's own time. Yet, in recrafting many older sayings, Franklin, who was among other things an inventor and musician, brought new design and melody to timeworn truisms. Franklin once created a list of 13 virtues to live by. This baker's dozen included temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and humility. The reader will see these virtues emphasized again and again in these quotes culled from Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanack."

Did Franklin himself listen to Poor Richard's advice? Sometimes. Sometimes not.

"Be temperate in wine, in eating, girls, and cloth, or the Gout will seize you and plague you both," Franklin wrote. Franklin relished his food, basked in the company of women, and at times used items of apparel to influence the way people perceived him. And, indeed, gout plagued Franklin for much of his life.

One thing that makes these aphorisms so compelling is that Franklin, while divine in apprehension, was in action very much a mortal. Take these morsels in moderation -- Franklin would have it no other way.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Eat to live, and not live to eat.

After three days men grow weary, of a wench, a guest, and weather rainy.

Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead.

Fish and visitors stink after three days.

To err is human, to repent divine; to persist devilish.

Those who in quarrels interpose, must often wipe a bloody nose.

What you seem to be, be really.

Tim was so learned, that he could name a horse in nine Languages. So ignorant, that he bought a cow to ride on.(This made me think of Teraaayzza.)

People who are wrapped up in themselves make small packages.

He that speaks much, is much mistaken.

Glass, China, and Reputation, are easily crack'd, and never well mended.

Silence is not always a Sign of Wisdom, but Babbling is ever a folly.

To be proud of virtue, is to poison yourself with the Antidote.

Ben Franklin would probably be writing kerry's obituary as kerry would have been found guilty and been executed for treason against new America.

So much for the value of the Harvard graduate degree earned by Kerry's ex-tart. Fader, indeed - just don't feed it to your cattle.

I think I've finally figured out Kerry's Iraq strategy:

1) Declare he'll begin withdrawing troops within 6 months of being elected. DONE

2) IF he wins, insurgents go quiet. Within 3 or 4 months the press takes note, saying all's quiet on the Iraq front.

3) Kerry declares victory and brings troops home.

4) Immediately, insurgents ignite civil war all over Iraq. Kerry, Edwards and other donkeys declare how fortunate we are that OUR troops aren't involved anymore (completely ignoring the violence would NOT be happending if Kerry had left U.S. troops there!).

5) Media lauds Kerry's precience and declares the Democrats have finally overcome their disadvantage on foreign policy. (Never mind that Iraq is riven by terrorism and civil war. We never should have gone there in the first place, don't ya see?!)

We'll call it the "To-Hell-with-Iraqis Plan".

The Dems certainly are selective about which bloody civil wars concern the U.S. and warrant military intervention - the Balkans, yes; Africa, no.

Camp Grenada

Surely one of the lamest tunes ever recorded.

Thanks for the memories, TO.

Not a lame tune, but lame lyrics to a fine tune: I present my song parody to the tune of "White Christmas," with apologies to Irving Berlin:

Verse:

The war is raging
I'm on my boat
Ferrying CIA.
There's never been such a day
Here or on Cam Ranh Bay.
But it's December the 24th
We're fighting gooks from Vietnam north ...

Chorus:

I'm dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas
Although there'll be no snow or ice.
On a secret mission
With bullets whizzing
Ouch! My butt's shot full of rice.

I'm dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas
With every Charlie that I shoot.
Nixon's war is stealing my youth
Hope the girl I marry has some loot.

I'm dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas
Just like the one I never knew.
Wonder why my shipmates
Express such deep hate
For me, I really have no clue.

I'm dreaming of a Cambodian Christmas
I hope my gift's a Purple Heart.
War crimes in which I played a part
Will give my political career a start.

What's the most interesting thing about this cartoon from the Charlotte Observer?

Answer: It assumes the reader knows all about the Kerry/Cambodia kerfuffle. BUT, the story has not been mentioned in the Observer (or any other mainstream paper). Yet the cartoonist is comfortable that his readers will get it. This is a fine example of a story making its impact on the web despite the MSM's best attempts to stifle it.

That's exactly what Mr. M and I were discussing earlier. We know all about the umpteen lies Kerry has told about his Vietnam service, but all Joe SixPack knows - because that's all the MSM have told him - is that Effin was a "hero." Pathetic. We must get the word out to every veteran we know!

We couldn't make this stuff up...

Are the secret service guys rolling their eyes?

U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Senator John Kerry (news - web sites) (D-MA) stands on the front desk in the lobby of his hotel to thank the crowd of cheering supporters who greeted him in Charlotte, North Carolina.
