I thought Billie was going to post it on Memorial Day. I never did finish that thread. :(

Whether she posted it or not, let me find it and I will post it for the first time or again.

Thanks for today's poem; it is really cute.

Faded Flags

There are a lot of faded flags. They’ve grown a tattered gray,
That were so bright and vibrant when we hung them on that day.
The fresh pain now has faded, and control is grimly kept.
The hurt that washed into our soul made furrows as we wept.

Faded too is memory, perhaps a blessed thing,
Except we get reminders of the terror that they bring.
They think they can deflect us. They hope they can prevail.
I have a bit of news for them, WE ARE NOT GOING TO FAIL.

We showed our children Peace and Love, they turned a little green,
And found compelling entertainment in a video machine.
We watched in horror as they chortled at the gore,
We hardly knew that they were hardening for War.

Our enemies underestimate the ease with which we cringe,
For they haven’t seen our kids go on a video killing binge.
They are prepared for battle, all we need to say is go,
“Game over”’s when they’ll note the scores belonging to the foe.

We didn’t want them trained this way, but since it’s come about,
I think we ought to let the kids just let their feelings out.
They’ll vent a lot of anger, and we’ll cheer them from the side,
And they’ll sweep away the flaming horde just like a rising tide.

And faded colors of the flag will gain a brighter gleam,
As the new recruits are added to the old part of the team.
Some may return with wounds and mental hurt that keep them blue,
While others will be stellar in the things they have to do.

The purest of their valor will be shown within the fight,
And white will represent them in the dawn’s approaching light.
And yes, we will have casualties. Many smiles will end up dead.
And we’ll sew the bravest color in their shroud in brightest red.

A Song of our Flag

Wilbur D. Nesbit
Your flag and my flag !
And, oh, how much it holds —
Your land and my land —
Secure within its folds !
Your heart and my heart
Beat quicker at the sight;
Sun-kissed and wind-tossed,
Red and blue and white.
The one flag — the great flag — the flag for me and you —
Glorified all else — the red and white and blue !
Your flag and my flag !
To every star and stripe
The drums beat as hearts beats
And fifers shrilly pipe !
Your flag and my flag —
A blessing in the sky;
Your hope and my hope —
It never hid a lie !
Home land and far land and half the world around,
Old Glory hears our glad salute and ripples to the sound !

Happy Flag Day!!!

Thanks, Amy.

The tree of Liberty notwithstanding, sometimes the meaning of the colors needs a little freshening too.

Howdy ! I understand. I COULD have easily slept in this morning. I was SOooo tired. I was up late (for me) and still got up early. It was slow going this morning. I did take a short nap after I got back from Bally's and that helped some.

Did you see/hear about the clintoon portrait unveiling ?

Here it is [barf alert! - I'll post it to ALL so you don't get shocked!] .....

I am the Flag
Howard Schnauber

I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up ... and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.

When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher,
my colors a little truer.

I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped -- I am saluted.
I am loved -- I am revered.
I am respected -- and I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of every war
for more then 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge,
Gettysburg, Shiloh and Appamatox.
I was there at San Juan Hill,
the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest,
Anzio, Rome, and the beaches of Normandy.
Guam, Okinawa, Korea and
KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam know me.
I was there.

I led my troops.
I was dirty, battleworn and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me
And I was proud.
I have been burned, torn and trampled
on the streets of countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.

I have been soiled upon, burned, torn
and trampled on the streets of my country.
And when it's by those whom I've served in battle -- it hurts.
But I shall overcome -- for I am strong.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth
and stood watch over the uncharted frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness
to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.

When I am torn into strips and used as bandages
for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I am flown at half-mast to honor my soldier,
Or when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving parent
at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,
I am proud.

My name is 'Old Glory'!
Long may I wave
o'er the land of the free
and the home of the brave.

Please forward this message to all who still love and respect me, that I may continued to fly proudly for another two hundred years.

The Flag Goes By
Henry Holcomb Bennett

Hats off!
Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,
A flash of color beneath the sky:
Hats off!
The flag is passing by!

Blue and crimson and white it shines,
Over the steel-tipped, ordered lines.
Hats off!
The colors before us fly;
But more than the flag is passing by.

Sea-fights and land-fights, grim and great,
Fought to make and to save the State:
Weary marches and sinking ships;
Cheers of victory on dying lips;

Days of plenty and years of peace;
March of a strong land's swift increase;
Equal justice, right, and law,
Stately honor and reverend awe;

Sign of a nation, great and strong
Toward her people from foreign wrong:
Pride and glory and honor,--all
Live in the colours to stand or fall.

Hats off!
Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums;
And loyal hearts are beating high:
Hats off!
The Flag is passing by!
