Rolling down the freeway at a leisurely pace
Not my customary style of riding
Not my customary weather either
There is more downshifting than upshifting in the rain

My consciousness still little bit haunted
by the last time I rode in this 11 months ago
the cracked mirror, and permanently discolored leg potent reminders
Still, I knew I would eventually have to run this gauntlet
The seat time, treated visor, and rain suit
preparations to that end

A light sky makes everything look too hazy
A dark sky brings only temporary relief before a downpour
a torrent, and ultimately...hail
Still, I remain upright and with each passing minute
fear assuaged by alertness, as the old experience
is supplanted by this one

By the time I reach my exit
my right boot
exposed so the header pipe doesn't melt the vinyl
feels more like a bucket than an article of clothing
a rapidly filling bucket

The traffic light less than a mile from home
brings a stop and a sloshing felt and heard
the driver of the truck beside me looks in somber fascination
changed to wonder as I burst into audible laughter
Finding the humor in the situation makes me almost wish
I had just a few more miles to go

Sitting in my warm apartment with a cup of hot coffee
wearing a grin of accomplishment and contentment
my cold and clammy feet warmed by the affections of the cat
makes me thankful that it I did not

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator
And I wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you feed a stray cat
And I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you make my favorite cake, just for me
And I knew that little things are special things.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I heard you say a prayer
And I believed there is a God I could always talk to.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I felt you kiss me goodnight
And I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw tears come from your eyes
And I learned that sometimes things hurt,
But it's all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw that you cared
And I wanted to be everything I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I looked...and wanted to say
"Thanks for all the things I saw
When you thought I wasn't looking."

Mom,

I cried, you came to comfort me,
When hungry, I was fed.
I'd fall asleep; you'd pick me up,
And carry me to bed.
You taught me how to write my name,
I learned to count from you.
I went to school you waved goodbye,
I know that you cried too.
You helped me through my growing years,
Yes you were always there.
Whenever I felt lost or down,
I knew I had your care.
Now I am grown, my kids are too,
And you're still there for me.
Oh yes you know I love you mom,
That anyone can see.
