Update (1535ET): Bloomberg reports that Sri Lanka’s cabinet has submitted its resignation, a ruling party member said, amid rising public anger about the government’s economic policies that have led to soaring living costs and a foreign exchange crisis.
As we detailed earlier, the tiny island nation of Sri Lanka is experiencing worsening shortages of food, fuel, and medicine amid a foreign exchange crisis. A 36-hour curfew went into effect this weekend as mass anti-government protests over soaring living costs are underway.

Most likely due to excessive government intervention.
Not to worry. They only need to lease out a few more ports to the Chinese for a few hundred years.
Coming to America
Let’s get our congress to do the same.
The high cost of diesel fuel and natural gas which is the core ingredient of fertilizer has led to farmers being unable to afford these resources. There will be lower harvests, food shortages, famines and hunger wars. The green lunatic war on fossil fuels is the primary cause. Most green lunatics are privlidged people from the EU and the US. They will suffer a bit, won’t starve but should be held accountable.
Except our leaders won’t have the honor to resign. They’ll vote themselves a pay raise.
This is going to spread.
Europe, specifically Germany, is expecting foods prices to soar 50% tomorrow.
When is there going to be widespread social unrest here with all the crap sandwiches we are being handed?
This crisis presents China with an opportunity to sattelitize a large strategically located air and naval base in easy striking range of Indian Ocean shipping routes. Trincomalee is a fine large deep water harbor.
You bet.
Last April the einstein prime minister had a great idea— he wanted the whole country to go organic so he banned synthetic pesticides and fertilizers — for the whole country. Naturally the rice production fell 20% causing the need to import expensive rice where before they had been rice exporters. The crucial Tea industry was also crippled. This is what kicked off the inflation in the first place. Don’t suppose the media bothered to add this inconvenient fact.
I expect high prices, spot shortages but no social unrest/riots.
We'll get through this crisis whole because we are a wealthy country, with our own oil/gas and grow most of our own food.
I am a dedicated prepper though, so....
(I drive to town once a week for shopping so, gasoline prices aren't an issue with me, 120 miles a month)
They 9ver borrowed from China.
"The president of debt-ridden Sri Lanka has asked China for the restructuring of its loans and access to preferential credit for imports of essential goods, as the island nation struggles in the throes of its worst economic crisis"
China Turns Its Back On Sri Lanka Economic Crisis
"Colombo [Sri Lanka], March 23 (ANI): China refused to assist Sri Lanka which appealed to reschedule its huge Chinese debt burden in the face of the Covid-19 outbreak that has adversely affected the tourism sector, said a media report."
Oh, yeah! Pass that hot potato onto the idiot that fills the empty post.
They’re too short on integrity and other important stuff.
More government will solve the problem.
