6.5 Creedmoor vs .308
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 3/27/2019 | J Blaha

Which is a Good Option as a SHTF Cartridge?
There are some great short action rifles available, some rifles being offered in 6.5 Creedmoor. There is another similar case, but not quite the same its the .308 Winchester. The 6.5 Creedmoor uses skinnier, lighter bullets and its faster downrange than the .308.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is very popular as a great selection for medium to long range (500-1000 yards) shooting. Which is why the military has incorporated this into some of their specialized rifles for long range targets.
Ballistic speaking, the skinny 6.5mm bullets perform exceptionally well, very closely matching the ballistic profile of a 300 Winchester Magnum, but with much less recoil and cost.

Its possible that for SHTF scenario the 6.5 Creedmoor is the better ballistic cartridge than .308 due to performance consistency. The 308 was designed in 1952 for a semi-automatic military rifle, while the 6.5 Creedmoor was designed in 2007 for better long range target performance in a bolt action rifle. Read the rest of this 6.5 Creedmoor vs 308.

A friend bought a .264 WinMag. Came with a set of dies. I occasionally prod him that he might wanna buy a shell holder for those dies. Oh, and some magnum primers. And, hey, just for laughs, maybe some bullets.

Then why not the .30-378 Weatherby Mag?

The only “new” thing about a couple of these cartridges is that they are “short action” rounds.

No, I meant a mile.

Last fall I got a wolf at the run at 460, that was almost point blank.

To your point, 7.62 / .308 is a common military round where 6.5 is not.

280...a very good cartridge. Not very popular, but it should be.

One of my buddy’s that was there for the mile shot shoots that. It’s real pricy. One would be better off with a 300 Norma or PRC for the range and price. You can get some extremely high bc bullets for the 338, but there comes a time when money comes into play.

Why do you say that? Just the other day I took out a ground squirrel in my flowers from 1761 yards with my Henry Golden Boy 22lr. The hard part of the shot was that it was moving....and at night. :o)

Yeah, money.

Around here, a hundred yards is about as far as you can see.... well, you can see the next ridge a few miles away, and across some big clear-cuts. In a SHTF scenario, just about anything would do. Thirty cal is good for lots of options...110 to 220 grains, .308 or 30-06. They’re still working on a range that’s been a political football for decades. It’s supposed to be 600 yards when finished Must be nice to have plains and cooperative coyotes in the back forty.

You’re welcome to come up and have some fun heh.

It’s a bit of a valley off my south side, my house is a bit higher up, so you can see a long ways out.

Absolute BS...agreed.

at 1760 yards, the bullet drop is 158 feet (1925 inches). Time of flight of the bullet is 3.8 seconds. The shooter would have to aim 158 feet high and approx 22 feet in front of the target.

I shot a ground squirrel (an alfalfa hay destroying evil creature) at 200 yards with a 17HMR. I did miss the first shot because the strong wind actually caused the bullet to rise in the downhill shot. Estimating point of impact I got it on the second round. Nobody called me a liar but they put it off as luck.

“In a ROL scenario, or a revolution, or a single war or invasion, you think you’re still gonna be alive after putting 2000 rounds?”

The fact is that in a real SHTF scenario most of the guys with a 5000 round stockpile of 223/308 ammo, 50 mags loaded and ready to go, and a basement full of tactical gear, will be dead before they empty their first magazine in combat.

A bullet goes somewhere. That's why you have to be so damn careful with them. I threw a golfball out into the sand dunes once, a told the guy with me I was gonna fire three shots with the .22, starting with a hold in the crosshairs, and walk onto the target...about 150 yards. Third shot drilled it. I was a little bit surprised.

"...Its possible that for SHTF scenario the 6.5 Creedmoor is the better ballistic cartridge than .308 due to performance consistency...."

That one sentence fill ASJ's daily quota for moronic gibberish.

Avoiding most people in a SHTF scenario is a really good idea. I think that skills acquired by snap shooting at birds would be valuable. As a practical matter, the ability to hit a basketball anywhere from 0-400 yards is sufficient. Having a pistol that no one knows you have would be good, too.
