The fact is that in a real SHTF scenario most of the guys with a 5000 round stockpile of 223/308 ammo, 50 mags loaded and ready to go, and a basement full of tactical gear, will be dead before they empty their first magazine in combat.
Avoiding most people in a SHTF scenario is a really good idea. I think that skills acquired by snap shooting at birds would be valuable. As a practical matter, the ability to hit a basketball anywhere from 0-400 yards is sufficient. Having a pistol that no one knows you have would be good, too.
