One of the wonderful things about homeschooling your children is that you don't have to follow the same schedule that your local public schools do. You can take breaks whenever it is convenient for your family and you can take trips to museums and local attractions at your leisure. There are still benefits, however, to planning trips around typical spring break calendars. This article will showcase five areas of the country that would be fantastic places for a spring break vacation for your home schooled family, combining fun with learning and specific family time.
Orlando, Florida
Orlando is best known for its large multiple-park attractions, specifically Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World. Universal Orlando isn't quite the educational destination that other places are, but it certainly is packed with fun! Movies such as E.T. and Jaws have their own attractions, little kids can be thrilled by Seuss brought to life, and there are roller coasters galore!

“you don’t have to follow the same schedule that your local public schools do”
There are lots of reasons to homeschool and this one is one of them. Imagine having to be told by the state when you can and can’t go on vacation.
My wife and I honeymooned at Disney World in mid-December (of 20002) ... and I cannot recommend an off-season Disney vacation highly enough. It was 60 degrees, no crowds, no lines, parks closed early ... a nice, relaxing Disney vacation.
We’re hoping to take the kids on an offseason vacation before they start school.

Is there really more than one or two days worth of stuff at Colonial Williamsburg?
Disney is very expensive although there might be some deals....somebody here said they are reducing the workforce.
Other ideas I've heard are day trips, camping, hiking, exploring local places within a 2-hour drive. Saves gas $$ and supports the local businesses.
This ping list is for articles of interest to homeschoolers. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping List. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added or removed from either list, or both.
Rental house rates at the beach or the lake are HALF before mid-May and after Labor Day. We’re planning our lake vacation the second week in September. Our oldest daughter is in college locally, but if she can’t cover her assignments online, she can drive into town for class.
When we lived in Virginia Beach we would go to Colonial Williamsburg each year. I would say honestly - two days tops. It’s gorgeous there in the spring. It is both historic and fun.
You can go to Jamestown, Yorktown, and the river plantations, too.
We rent a condo on the beach in Florida every year in the beginning of May. You can’t beat the prices! One the many things I love about homeschooling :)
We love getting a house in the Outer Banks, NC in September. The weather is usually beautiful, the water is warm, the beaches are practically empty. The other kids we meet are homeschooled too. It’s one of our favorite homeschooling perks.
I'd almost rather take a vacation in Baghdad than in Orlando.
We’ve been to Myrtle Beach twice in May, and this September will be our second weeklong stay at Lake Norman, near Charlotte. We’re having a baby in June, so I didn’t want to drive far; living on vacation with a newborn isn’t any more difficult than being at home, but driving with one (and eight siblings) is awful.
It’s harder to plan now that we’ve got one in college, but she has a certain allowance for excused absences, if she gets her work turned in. I’m trying to persuade her to stay home, go to school, and take care of all the pets, but she’s not going for it.
Shelby County is very lovely this time of year. : )
Battlefields are usually my first choice.
I agree with you. My wife and 3 kids just got back from a month in Florida (I flew down to join them for the last week), pulling a camping trailer. They skipped the Mouse and got a lot more educational stuff done while still having a lot of fun. Disneyworld has become badly over-rated and is a sign of hedonistic excess.
All the homeschool families I’ve met take full advantage of off-season prices and thinner crowds for their vacations. But, we haven’t taken even one vacation, yet. Our children have never been “on vacation”. For years, we’ve been hoping to take one, but either our budget won’t allow it or something else happens. This past fall, we were planning to drive to Florida, but then the gas prices shot through the roof. Now that they’ve dropped again, my husband is too worried about taking time off from work in this economy with all the layoffs.
Yep. I will NEVER visit Disney World in the peak season again. Great times to visit are late spring (mid April to late May), and Labor Day to early March.
