A South Park Republican defends the show

I am grateful to Andrew Sullivan for calling to my attention a blog entry in defense of South Park, from a site titled "Sorry Baby, But Nobody Rules The Tom Monster." Blogger Tom Meyer rebuts Brent Bozzell (whom I generally admire) for his somewhat unfair attack on South Park.
I stipulate that SP is crude and vulgar, as would anyone anchored in reality. But SP also stands up for some very positive values, in a way that is both attractive and accessible to people in college, or a few years after it or before it. The phrase "South Park Republicans" has already come into wide usage, and it reflects an exceedingly important youth trend that we need to reinforce: conservatism is hip because it doesn't tolerate BS.

The Rainforest episode with Getting Gay with Kids is another classic:
There's a place called the rainforest that truly sucks a$$
Let's knock it all down and get rid of it fast.
You say, "Save the rainforest," but what do you know?
You've never been to the rainforest before.
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
To tell you things you might not like to hear.
You only fight these causes 'cause caring sells.
All you activists can go f*** yourselves!
Someday if we work hard, boys and girls,
There'll be no more rainforests left in the entire world!
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
To spread the word and bring you cheer. Yeah!
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
Let's knock down the rainforest! What do you say?!
It's totally gay! It's totally gay!

This place smells like a-s!
That episode and Office Space are the only two times I can remember Jennifer Aniston being funny.

I am probably one of the few that wasn't that upset when they ran the Terrence and Phillip episode as an April Fools joke, when people wanted to know who Cartman's dad was. That was actually a very funny episode.

And he did it to prove a point! That he was a bigger "stupid whore" than Paris Hilton. And when he won the "South Park Whore-Off," he made the point that it's not good to be a stupid whore! And that kids shouldn't want to be stupid whores. See, it's a morality play with a good message!
My favorite part of the episode is when Wendy first sees Paris Hilton, and can't understandably comprehend the hubbub:
Wendy: I don't get it, what does she do?
Friend1: She's such a bitch!
Wendy: But What does she do?
Friend2: She's totally spoiled and snobby.
Wendy: What does she do!?!
Man behind Wendy: She's a whore!
That sums up Paris in a convenient little nutshell, and is a hilarious way to do it to boot.

South Park is entertainment.
Entertainment and entertainers should not be taken seriously.

Yeah, but I've never forgiven Wendy for shooting Miss Ellen into the center of the Sun.

Perhaps Bozell and 'you-know-who' are the same person.

They're still doing reruns. I think new shows start next month.

SP is a great, funny witty show for adults. It is not for children. It is funny and skewers the Left brilliantly. It is often over the top but that's okay with me because I find that funny. If anyone doesn't, change the channel

Satirical Comedy is one of the few cultural enterprises where American culture continues to shine, without need of NEA grants.
MAD Magazine, Lenny Bruce, Harvard Lampoon, SCTV, SNL, etc.
Now South Park. **** Yeah, America!

Me too. I think it's one of the funniest early episodes there is. Yes, it's pretty much a fart joke, but it's a fart joke done in a parody of Sally Field's "Not Without My Daughter!". Plus it has Scott, and he's such a d*ck.

"Terrence, let's look for treasure!"

It's even funnier if you listen to the commentary-mini on the dvd before this episode. Appearantly one of the South Park duo was talked into vacationing in some rain forest village by "Flea" of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame. As a result, this episode is a payback of sorts.

I have always loved south park and am years removed from college (okay, decades removed). This last season had some great moments but seemed to rely to much on grossness. I do not think it was as intelligently done as some past seasons.
Still it was good and as always fun. I think though that they missed a chance for a show with Arafat. (Dead, not dead, dead again, wife keeping alive for the money, french involvement.. just so much material, "they killed Arafat, you bastards!".)
I will keep watching. It is still one of the few shows that the reruns usually still cause belly laughs.
