Oh yes, although I have (only) a little (Scottish) Gaelic now. I was a student for about six years.

And likely would be still, but for Seattle traffic. It was really fun (we had a superb teacher) and fascinating -- a language that comes with ann entire worldview built in.

We had to learn spanish in school. There isn't
anyone around here who teaches anything else.
I'd try to learn a language myself, but I've

Thanks. It's not the one I went looking for, which was a Gaelic lullaby written in North Carolina and very old -- talks about deep woods and wolves, among other things in wild America. It's a staple for "Seirm" (trans: a soft? sound), the Seattle Gaelic choir, and a favorite of mine. I've a copy in a notebook downstairs in the library, I think...

I'd try to learn a language myself, but I've heard it's more difficult that way.

It is VERY hard to learn a language on your own. Maybe to read and write, but speaking... I doubt it. Too many subtleties. For example, I never mastered the "slender 'l'" versus the "thick 'l'" of Gaelic. I can barely even hear the difference. So unless I move to the Gaidhealtachd (Gaelic-speaking regions), I'm doomed forever to speak Gaelic with a heavy American accent.

Spanish is a nice language. I am told it is one of the easiest to learn, and I wish I knew it (I have a higher priority). I did't do very well in grade school, but at the time I wasn't interested one bit.

What I, and probably you, have been exposed to is, um, higher Mexican ('casita' as opposed to lower 'casucha'), but it's still strange to hear our Gibraltarian rector speak Castilian ('cathita').

Languages were really quite impenetrable for me (despite being married to a woman who speaks a dozen-odd such, despite my German classes, despite the fact that half the family can speak Spanish) until, on a lark at age 40, I took a year of Latin. (I quit after a year due to a move.)

Latin taught me much about English, and languages in general, because so many linguistic concepts that are hidden in English are out on front stage in Latin... if you ever get a chance, study Latin! I truly doubt you'll ever regret the effort. And Spanish will give you a head start.

Our spanish teacher was raised in a
military family, even spending time in
Spain. The only thing she left out were
things like teaching us to use the word
"vosotros". She said it's only used in
Spain. She pointed out the differences
in the spanish language. Castilians speak
with a kind of lisp.
