But, but, but..
The press would have us believe that ALL of Europe hates us and is foaming at the mouth about this!

Nice to know that somebody loves us.
Just wish that the Czech Republic backed us up.
(My step-daughter was 1/2 Czech.)

An interesting article about Poland and the Poles...

You know, I was born and grew up in Chicago...and its a fact, as far as cities go, Warsaw has the most Poles in any given city in the world, and Chicago has the 2nd greatest number of Poles, in any given city in the world...

I had so many friends, neighbors, and coworkers who were Polish....and there are large shopping areas, where most clerks know both Polish and English...and even the ads and signs in the stores are in both English and Polish...and its been that way ever since I have been a little girl....

The Polish I knew, were great Americans, proud of their service in the military....they are hard working people, and place loyalty to family very high...Most of those Poles living in Chicago, still have relatives living in Poland...and most of the Poles who felt themselves so lucky to have made it to America, still sent money back home to family left behind(American dollars were so very important to them, especially during the Cold War)....

Which has always made me wonder....Why are there so many Polish jokes? I take personal offense at those jokes, simply because of my own experience with the fine Polish people that I knew and loved...

God Bless Poland for sticking with us in the matter of the Iraq War....the Poles have known what it was like, to live under a brutal regime...

To: Darksheare; everyone
A man is driving down a deserted stretch of highway when he notices a sign

out of the comer of his eye. It reads: SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS HOUSE OF
PROSTITUTION 10 MILES

He thinks it was a figment of his imagination and drives on without a second
thought. Soon, he sees another sign, which says: SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS
HOUSE OF PROSTITUTION 5 MILES

Suddenly, he begins to realize that these signs are for real. Then he drives
past a third sign saying: SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS HOUSE OF PROSTITUTION NEXT
RIGHT

His curiosity gets the best of him and he pulls into the drive. On the far
side of the parking lot is a stone building with a small sign next to the
door reading: SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS

He climbs the steps and rings the bell. The door is answered by a nun in a
long black habit who asks, "What may we do for you, my son?"

He answers, "I saw your signs along the highway, and was interested in
possibly doing business." "Very well, my son. Please follow me." He is led
through many winding passages and is soon quite disoriented. The nun stops
at a closed door and tells the man, "Please knock on this door."

He does as he is told and another nun in a long habit, holding a tin cup,
answers this door. This nun instructs, "Please place $50 in the cup, then go
through the large wooden door at the end of this hallway."

He gets $50 out of his wallet and places it in the second nun's cup. He
trots eagerly down the hall and slips through the door, pulling it shut
behind him. As the door locks behind him, he finds himself back in the
parking lot, facing another small sign:

GO IN PEACE. YOU HAVE JUST BEEN SCREWED BY THE SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS.
SERVES YOU RIGHT, YOU SINNER.

Good information - I did not know that about Chicago.

Most jokes are fairly interchangeable when poking fun at any identifiable group: what I know as Texas A&M, or Aggie, jokes here are probably the same ones you know as Polish, and in other parts of the country I'm guessing it's Italian, or maybe Mexican or something.

There's usally a hint of jealousy involved, it seems to me.

Back after my daily Jeopardy trouncing.

There is even a street on the south side of Chicago, which was renamed in honor of the Pope, so proud were the Polish of Chicago, ....They had the numbers to initiate and get through a regulation or bill to change the name of a street in Chicago, from whatever it was(which I dont know) to Pope John Paul street or avenue...

And there is another street in Chicago, this a big main thoroughfare, which was called 'Crawford' ave during my moms time, but sometime while she was growing up, the name was changed to 'Pulaski' in honor of a Polish military hero.....So most people of my moms generation still call it 'Crawford' ave, and but subsequent generations know it as 'Pulaski' Ave....but to any Chicagoan, you can say either one, and everyone knows which street you are talking about...

I grew up near Humboldt Park, on the Northwest side of Chicago...Humboldt Park is not just a little city park, but a monster park, covering acres, its an oasis in the middle of the city...and there are many statues put up in honor of various people...there is a Leif Erickson statue there, probably because there were so many Norweigians living in the area at one time...There is also a statue of someone called 'Kozkyuski( I am sure the spelling is wrong, but its right phonetically)...now I am sure almost no one really knows who this is, but it is another Polish military hero...

Many Poles had their names shortened when they came through Ellis Island...the spelling and pronunciation was just too much for the workers to cope with...so very often, their names were simply shortened and changed somewhat...

But many of them were able to preserve their names intact..I always remember in high school, when one particular teacher would call the roll in the morning...she just could not pronounce those long Polish names, and everyday she would pronounce them differently and murder them...we smart ass kids would just snicker and laugh...

So the Polish people have indeed, made Chicago their home, and Chicago is the better for it...

The only times I've really seen C-town is from the air, making a connecting flight to Des Moines, IA. My impression is that 1) it is huge, 2) that it is green and beautiful, and that 3) Lake Shore Drive must be 500 miles long.

What a city.

I need to see it from the ground one of these days.

Time to fire up the grill for the evening's burn.

Please be well all.

Well, I would not want to live there anymore...I am too used to living in the country, on the west coast....

I left Chicago in 1978, and have only been back one time, in 1981, when my brother died....

However, I must say, growing up there was wonderful...and I know I will be glad to revisit there once we are retired...

There really is just so much there...wonderful, wonderful museums, zoos, the lake front beaches, the restaurants, the clubs, and I could go on and on...

When we moved from there, it was straight from the middle of the big city, to the hills and countryside of North Carolina...it was quite a change and quite a shocker for this big city girl....

But I grew to love the countryside and eventually being inside the cities made me nervous...

Even now, ,here in Western Washington, we live away from the city....

But to anyone who has never visited and toured around Chicago, you should do it...there is so much to see and do there, and altho I never want to live there again, a good deal of my heart is still there...

Have you ever been to the Olympia Game Forest, there up in or near Sequim...

Nope, I've been around the Peninsula a number of times, but usually ended up out at Lake Ozette and hiked out to Cape Alava or Sand Point....Not into the Game Parks very much...Northwest Trek is not to far down the road from here, but have never been there either....Oh well.....
